Rail accident in Thailand

At approximately 09:05[1] or 09:30[2] (ICT) on January 14, 2026, a construction crane fell on a passenger train with 195 people onboard in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand, killing at least 29[3] people and injuring 79 others. The train departed from Krung Thep Aphiwat Station in Bangkok for Ubon Ratchathani province.[4][5][6] The train pulled the crane’s cable, causing it to fall onto three carriages, derail the train, and start a brief fire.[7][1][2]

The train involved was an express train serving Route 21 from the Bangkok Aphiwat Central Station to Ubon Ratchathani.[8]

The crane in question was an 400-tons overhead crane used for the construction of the Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed railway network. The section where the collapse occured was under Contract 3-4 (Lam Takhong–Sikhio) awarded to the Italian-Thai Development (ITD) company in 2020.[9][10]
