Public charter school in Los Angeles, California, United States
New West Charter School (commonly New West or New West Charter, abbreviated as NWC) is a public, college-preparatory charter middle and high school in West Los Angeles, California. It serves over 1,000 students in grades 6–12 across two campuses. Founded in 2003 by Los Angeles parents, the school operates three programs: middle school, high school, and an independent study track known as New West Personalized Learning School (NWC+)[3]. Students are required to wear uniforms as part of the school’s dress code policy.[2]
New West Charter operates two campuses in West Los Angeles a mile apart:[2]
- Pico Campus – Grades 6–7, 11625 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064
- Armacost Campus – Grades 8–12 and NWC+, 1905 Armacost Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90025
The development of New West was a community effort led by parents who organized in the early 2000s to create a new school providing choice in public education. “Obtaining the charter and opening the school in September 2003 relied on many parents volunteering their time, effort, and resources to make New West a reality for their children and others.”[2]
New West opened in 2003 as a grades 6–8 middle school at its original Pico Boulevard location. In 2012, the school sold the Pico campus to the now-defunct City School and moved into an abandoned warehouse on Armacost Avenue 1 mile north to accommodate the addition of a high school program. In 2018, City School moved to Baldwin Hills. Shortly after, New West bought back the Pico property, and in 2019 the renovated Pico campus reopened for grades 6 and 7.[2]
In 2018, they added their hybrid learning option NWC+, housed in the previous Armacost 6th grade classrooms.[3]
Based on publicly available data:[2]
New West offers a college-preparatory curriculum aligned with California standards. Core subjects include English, mathematics, science, and social studies, with additional courses in the arts and technology. NWC is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2019.[4]
The school offers band, choir, and dance programs. End-of-semester student performances are staged in local auditoriums, including Santa Monica High School and Pepperdine University. The dance program fulfills a physical education credit and includes instruction in ballet, modern, jazz, and hip hop.[2]
New West fields teams in cross country, track, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and other sports. Notable rivalries include local schools such as University High School.[2]
Physical education at the Armacost campus often takes place at nearby Stoner Park, due to the lack of a field.
New West operates a lottery-based admissions system.[5] All applicants must submit a completed application by the deadline to receive a lottery number. If the number of applicants exceeds available spaces, admission is determined by a public random drawing/lottery. Late applications are placed on the waitlist in order of receipt. Students with disabilities follow the same application process, and there is no application fee or tuition. New West encourages families to remain actively involved in their children’s education.[5]
Parent and Community Involvement
[edit]
New West Charter emphasizes strong parental and community engagement. Families are expected to participate actively in their children’s education, including volunteering at least 16 hours per year as outlined in the school’s Home School Agreement.[5]
The school also benefits from donations and support from a wide range of individual and organizational donors. Donors are recognized publicly, including donor walls displayed at the Armacost campus.[2]
In January 2022, New West Charter was the subject of a lawsuit filed by students and parents challenging the school’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement. Unvaccinated students were not permitted to attend in-person classes, prompting protests and local media coverage.[6][7][8]
In 2023, the Los Angeles Police Department investigated alleged grade tampering at New West Charter. Administrators discovered irregularities in the grading system, prompting a review of academic records.[9]
