Bolu Babalola
Bolu Babaloa is a British-Nigerian author with a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in American Politics and amp; History from UCL[1]. Her master’s thesis was on Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and she was awarded a distinction for it. A writer of books, scripts and retorts. A lover of love and self-coined “romcomoisseur.” She writes stories about dynamic women with distinct voices who love and are loved with audacity. She is a believer in women being both “Beauty and the Beast.” She is not a fan of writing her own bios. She can be found tweeting @Beebabs.
Early Life
Babalola was born in Guy’s Hospital[2] in Southwark[3] to Nigerian Yoruba [4]parents and grew up in East London. She attended Valentines High School in Iiford for sixth form. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws[5] from the University of Reading in 2012 and later a Master of Arts in American Politics and History from University College London in 2018.
Career
Babalola began her career working as an assistant writer and producer for BBC comedy, contributing to The Javone Prince Show and Tracy Ullman’s Show. She pitched the Cecile Emeke web series Ackee & Saltfish[6] as an assistant producer and helped produce the first episode. In August, 2020, she worked on a television programme with Tiger Aspect.[7] She was shortlisted in 2016 for The Guardian[8] and 4th Estate B4ME[9] prize for her debut story, Netflix and Chill[10] .
She has written for publications such as Vice[11], Vulture[12], GQ[13], Cosmopolitan[14] and Stylist[15]
A television and film columnist for Dazed[16] She named Insecure by Issa Rae[17] and Larry Wilmore, Brown Sugar, When Harry Met Sally, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Lovesick and New Girl as her favourite romcoms.
