Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
I am nominating this for featured list removal because items in this list mostly read as a record of career achievements. But the award, as the name states, is given for a specific “historic achievement”.
For example, the Sammy Sosa row mentions his 1998 MVP, 66 home runs, and three career 60 home run seasons. But it does NOT mention the actual historic achievement for which Sosa was specifically given the award: hitting 62 home runs, which tied McGwire for the single-season home run record and passed the longstanding Roger Maris record of 61. The McGwire row was similar until I recently changed it to refer specifically to his 62nd home run.
Ohtani’s row is a large summary of his four-year career, but barely mentions why he was actually awarded the trophy in 2001. The trophy was awarded not for his 2018 Rookie of the Year, 2019 Tommy John surgery, or 2021 MVP. It was awarded by the Commissioner for “becoming the sport’s first two-way All-Star — starting in the All-Star game as both a pitcher and a designated hitter.”
This list does not comprehensively cover the subject and its defined scope. PK-WIKI (talk) 17:14, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- Nominator Killervogel5 is long gone. Page creator me can step in some. You’re right that many of the descriptions need to be changed. The Sosa row includes things that happened after he received the award. I found that MLB.com does have a list of the specific achievements the award is given for:
- 2021: Shohei Ohtani for his historic season as a two-way player, including starting the All-Star Game as both a pitcher and designated hitter.
- 2014: The retiring Derek Jeter for his numerous all-time postseason records (hits, runs, total bases).
- 2014: Vin Scully on his 65 years of service to baseball.
- 2013: Mariano Rivera, who retired as the all-time saves leader.
- 2011: Ken Griffey Jr., on his great career in baseball and for being one of the most popular players of all-time.
- 2007: Rachel Robinson, on the 60th anniversary of her husband’s breaking of the color barrier and for her advancement of his legacy.
- 2006: Roberto Clemente, posthumously, during the 2006 All-Star Game in Pittsburgh and presented to his wife, Vera, and their family.
- 2005: Ichiro Suzuki for his record-breaking hit total achieved in the 2004 season, surpassing George Sisler.
- 2004: Roger Clemens for his 300th win and record Cy Young Award total.
- 2001: The Seattle Mariners for their record-tying 116-win regular season.
- 2001: The retiring Tony Gwynn for his record-tying eight NL batting titles.
- 2001: Rickey Henderson for his all-time career records in stolen bases, walks and runs.
- 2001: Barry Bonds for his single-season home run record.
- 1998: Both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa for their record-breaking single-season home run-record chase.
- 1998: Cal Ripken Jr. in commemoration of the end of his legendary Iron Man streak.
- Some of these are very specific. Others (Griffey especially) are more broad. Clemente’s doesn’t directly mention his achievements at all, and the contemporaneous reference just broadly talks about how great he was. I agree this can be improved and perhaps I can achieve that to save FL status. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:33, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
