Dayton, located in Southwest Ohio, is the 6th most populated city in Ohio and was once a major innovation city. Dayton was home to the Wright Brothers who helped create planes, was the birthplace of NCR(National Cash Register Company), and even had a hand in the Manhattan Project. However in 2008 there were massive layoffs at General Motors which supplied lots of residents in Dayton. This was a major hit to Dayton’s economy and set a ripple effect throughout the city. This combined with other factors like a history of redlining, and limited transportation emphasized the food insecurity issue Dayton was already facing. In recent years Covid-19 has done another huge blow by shutting down some grocery stores and jobs creating more poverty and less access to food. |
