Please see Wikipedia:Administrators’ noticeboard/Edit warring. The user requiring protection is the one making wrong edits not just against the help page he himself linked here (“/h/ is usually dropped” means that the rule is dropping it so any exception isn’t decided by him but must be sourced) but also without providing any sources on his behalf; also note that this user’s behaviour (“it’s like this because I say so, period”) caused him an indefinite ban by ArbCom in Italian Wikipedia. ~2025-32055-48 (talk) 12:09, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Either in every single case of names and words containing <h> and transcribed in IPA linking to Help:IPA/Italian we add the sound /h/ (but such a folly itself should be strongly sourced), or it means that “you” are a source yourself to tell us where /h/ should be added and where it shouldn’t. Even the (unsourced) sentence “/h/ is usually dropped” on which you base your argument doesn’t mean that <h> could be either pronounced or not pronounced in any case, just that normally it’s never pronounced but there’re cases where one might choose to pronounce it. An example: “Heidi” might be pronounced both with or without /h/ (source), while “hotel” can be pronounced only without it (source); the source is one of the Italian pronunciation dictionaries contained in the help page. Can you provide any reliable source to prove that Hack and Mahmood are exceptions to the general rule that /h/ is silent in Italian like I did for the examples above? ~2025-32055-48 (talk) 13:06, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

“/h/ is usually dropped” doesn’t mean “/h/ is always dropped, must never be pronounced and should not be used in transcriptions.” In fact, quite the opposite and you can’t prove otherwise. Being told “Stop vandalizing Wikipedia.” by a user who’s been banned by an ArbCom deliberation becuase he continued accusing admins to abuse their powers and to violate the rules they should protect is quite funny. (In other words, the rule is that the phoneme is always there, but since it’s not a phoneme of Italian many speakers drop it. It’s not a case by case thing, it always works the same. We’re all still waiting for sources proving that Hack and Mahmood can be pronounced with /h/.
