Creation of rivers and lakes from the 2024 monsoon in the Sahara

The 2024 North African Monsoon was one of the largest recorded monsoons in the Sahara Desert, forming a full monsoon, and reaching areas of the desert that had not seen water in decades.

The Sahara desert receives small amounts of rain throughout the year. This is caused by the the extreme heat, however unlike the Congo Basin, North Africa does not receive enough sunlight to trigger a major hydrological cycle, where the sunlight heats the ocean enough to encourage evaporation which later falls as rain.

The North African Monsoon causes the rainy season in North-West Africa.
