The Armed Forces Europe and Middle East Grand Lodge, A.F.&A.M. (AFEMEGL) is a private, fraternal ceremonial organization established to serve military-affiliated members of the United States Armed Forces communities across Europe and the Middle East. It operates independently under Army Regulation 210–22 and AE Regulation 210–22, which govern private organizations on U.S. military installations.[1]
The Armed Forces Europe and Middle East Grand Lodge, A.F.&A.M. (AFEMEGL) was ceremonially consecrated on 2 May 2025 at Katterbach Kaserne, Germany. The founding ceremony was led by Most Worshipful Brother Eddie Merfalen Guevara, a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) and former Grand Master of the American Canadian Grand Lodge (2015). [2]
Following its establishment, AFEMEGL conferred authority to charter subordinate Lodges across U.S. Army Garrison communities in Germany. These Lodges were formed to provide ceremonial fellowship, moral instruction, and fraternal support to military-affiliated personnel stationed in Europe and the Middle East.
The Grand Lodge’s Constitution affirms its powers “to confer the three degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry and to govern subordinate Lodges within its jurisdiction.”[3]
Following its consecration in May 2025, AFEMEGL chartered five subordinate Lodges across major U.S. Army Garrison communities in Germany. Each Lodge operates under the AFEMEGL Constitution and Bylaws and complies with Army Regulation 210–22 and AE Regulation 210–22, which govern private organizations on military installations.<ref>AFEMEGL Constitution and Bylaws, 2025 Edition. Internal document.</ref>
The constituent Lodges include:
- Liberty Lodge No. 1 – U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach
- Valor Lodge No. 2 – U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria
- Sentinel Lodge No. 3 – U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart
- Fortitude Lodge No. 4 – U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
- Regimental Lodge No. 5 – U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz
These Lodges provide ceremonial fellowship, moral instruction, and community engagement opportunities for active duty personnel, retirees, Department of Defense civilians, and contractors residing in Europe and the Middle East.
Purpose and Mission
[edit]
AFEMEGL provides Masonic fellowship, moral instruction, and charitable service for U.S. military personnel, veterans, Department of Defense civilians, and contractors residing in Europe and the Middle East.
The Grand Lodge emphasizes:
- Upholding the ancient landmarks and traditions of Freemasonry
- Promoting personal development, brotherly love, relief, and truth
- Encouraging civic engagement and support for deployed or forward-stationed service members
- Maintaining independence as a non-federal, fraternal organization, not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense
Jurisdiction and Sovereignty
[edit]
AFEMEGL is a sovereign and independent Masonic jurisdiction, established under the authority of its founding Charter and Constitution. It is not subject to any civilian Grand Lodge jurisdiction, including those of Europe or North America, and operates in accordance with military regulations governing private, non-federal entities.
While not formally seeking recognition, AFEMEGL has announced its intent to present its historical and constitutional background for review at the Council of Grand Masters of North America (CGMNA) Conference in February 2026.
The Grand Lodge’s Constitution defines its powers “to confer the three degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry and to govern subordinate Lodges within its jurisdiction.”[4]
Organization and Leadership
[edit]
AFEMEGL is governed by a Grand Lodge composed of elected and appointed officers, as defined in its Constitution. The leadership structure reflects ceremonial tradition and administrative clarity, ensuring continuity across all subordinate Lodges.<ref>AFEMEGL Constitution and Bylaws, 2025 Edition. Internal document.</ref>
Key officers include:
- Most Worshipful Grand Master – Eddie Merfalen Guevara [5]
- Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master – Roland Meader
- Additional officers such as Grand Secretary, Grand Treasurer, and regional representatives, each fulfilling ceremonial and administrative duties as outlined in the Constitution.
The Grand Lodge convenes regularly to oversee Lodge activities, ratify ceremonial documents, and uphold the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.
The official seal of the Armed Forces Europe and Middle East Grand Lodge, A.F.&A.M., bears the inscription:
- “Armed Forces Europe and Middle East A.F.&A.M. – Power to Confer – Sacred Duty.”
This seal appears on all charters, certificates, and formal communications of the Grand Lodge.
Legal and Regulatory Compliance
[edit]
As stated in its Constitution, AFEMEGL operates as a fraternal, private organization under the provisions of Army Regulation 210–22 and AE Regulation 210–22, which authorize private associations on U.S. military installations. The organization explicitly prohibits any use of Department of Defense titles, logos, or symbols that would imply governmental endorsement.
AFEMEGL operates as a fraternal, private organization under the provisions of Army Regulation 210–22 and AE Regulation 210–22.[6]
Activities and Community Engagement
[edit]
AFEMEGL and its constituent Lodges participate in ceremonial observances, charitable initiatives, and community outreach programs in coordination with U.S. Army Garrison communities. These activities reflect the fraternity’s principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth, and are tailored to support soldiers, veterans, families, and host-nation partners.
Lodge members have organized events such as community breakfasts, volunteer drives, and educational presentations, often in collaboration with local organizations and military support services. These efforts aim to foster unity, promote civic engagement, and honor the legacy of service shared by military and civilian members alike.
All activities are conducted in compliance with Army Regulation 210–22 and AE Regulation 210–22, which govern private organizations operating on U.S. military installations.[7]
