Melanie Lawson is an American news reporter/anchor and attorney from Houston, Texas.[1]

Early life & education

Melanie Lawson was born in Houston, Texas. She grew up on Houston’s Third Ward.[1]

Lawson earned her undergradate degree in 1976 from Princeton University, where she majored in politics. During this time, in 1978, she worked as an intern at ABC13 in Houston.[2]

She then attended Columbia University where she earned a joint degree in journalism and law. (She is licensed in New York state and Texas).[1]

After gradating from law school, Lawson worked at a Wall Street law firm in New York for three years.[1]

Lawson joined Houston television station KTRK ABC 13 on September 13, 1982.[1]

After the death of her father in 2024, Lawson took a year leave-of-absence from the station. She returned in July 2025. Her last positions with ABC 13 were as the anchor of Eyewitness News at 11 a.m. and Live at 5.[1]

On November 25, 2025, Lawson announced that she would be retiring in January 2026, after over 43 years with ABC 13.[3][1]

Lawson include three Emmy Awards, a lifetime achievement award from Women in Film and Television, and theEcumenism Award from the Anti-Defamation League.[4].
