Klippa is a Dutch software company founded in 2015 in Groningen, the Netherlands, that specializes in Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) using artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. The company develops AI-powered solutions for automating document workflows, including Optical Character Recognition (OCR), data extraction, identity verification, and fraud detection across various industries like financial, logistics, and manufacturing.[1][2] Klippa operates with a focus on reducing administrative processes and improving operational efficiency for businesses while maintaining CO₂-neutral operations.[3]
History and founding
[edit]
Klippa was founded in 2015 in Groningen to digitize paper processes using modern technologies. It started as an app for freelancers to digitize and store receipts, before expanding into broader document automation solutions.[4]
In 2019, Klippa received €200,000 in funding from NOM (Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands). The funding was intended as a bridge to a Series A round and supported international growth. At the time, Klippa’s systems were already processing documents daily in Spain, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom.[5][6]
In 2020, Klippa secured €1.2 million in funding from Bizcuit Group, a fintech company that had been a customer of Klippa’s automation technology for several years before investing. The funding round, completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, enabled product development and international expansion.[7][8]
By 2022, Klippa had grown into an international team of around 65 employees with offices in Groningen and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Brașov in Romania.[2]
Products and technology
[edit]
Klippa operates two primary SaaS platforms:
- DocHorizon: a no-code Intelligent Document Processing platform designed to automate document workflows. It includes OCR, document classification, data extraction, document conversion, anonymization, verification, and fraud detection. The software can extract line items, signatures, and images, converting documents into structured formats such as CSV, JSON, XML, and XLSX, and integrate via SDK or API. Klippa is also a certified PEPPOL Access Point, indicating that DocHorizon supports electronic invoice delivery over Peppol networks.[2][9][10][11]
- SpendControl: a spend management solution that combines automated invoice processing, expense claims, approval workflows, and corporate credit card functionality.[12]
International expansion
[edit]
Headquartered in Groningen, Klippa opened a second office in Amsterdam and later established a team in Brașov, Romania. By 2019, the company had expanded its activities into Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.[2][5][6] In 2022, Klippa also expanded into Germany by opening an office in Hamburg, further strengthening its presence in Europe.[13]
Corporate culture and sustainability
[edit]
Klippa positions itself as a CO₂-neutral company and emphasizes environmental sustainability in its operations.[3] Its products are designed to reduce the use of paper-based processes and support digital transformation in business.[5]
As of 2025, the leadership team of Klippa includes:
- Yeelen Knegtering — Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
- Bart-Jan Maatman — Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
- Jeroen Kant — Chief Commercial Officer (CCO)
- Jeroen Bobbeldijk — Chief Technology Officer (CTO)[14]
Awards and recognition
[edit]
Klippa has received several industry recognitions for its growth and innovation:
- Deloitte Technology Fast 50: ranked #7 in 2022, #17 in 2023, and #33 in 2024 with 585% growth.[15][16][17]
- Groningen Enterprise Award (Groninger Ondernemingsprijs): winner in 2022.[18]
- King Willem I Award nomination: in 2024 in the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) category.[19]
- Document Management Awards 2024: winner of the “One to Watch: Product” category for DocHorizon.[20][21]
Acquisition by SER Group
[edit]
In March 2025, Klippa was acquired by the German SER Group, a company specializing in enterprise content management and content automation.[22][23] SER Group, backed by the private equity firms TA Associates and Carlyle, acquired Klippa to expand its intelligent document processing capabilities.[24][25]
Klippa’s CEO, Yeelen Knegtering, emphasized that the acquisition provides the company with the resources to take its technology to a global scale: “We want to take our software worldwide, and we’ve now achieved that. The acquisition opens doors for us to collaborate with larger organizations and further expand our impact.”[26]
