US Nonprofit Organization

School the World is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to disrupting the cycle of extreme poverty through education. Founded in 2009 by former attorney Kate Curran, the organization has developed a community-driven model that integrates school construction, teacher training, parental engagement, and student support across Central America and, more recently, the Philippines. As of 2024, the organization has reached over 170,000 children and expanded its programming into four countries: Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and the Philippines.

School the World was originally incorporated as “The Giving Project” in 2009 and later rebranded to its current name. The organization launched its first education programs in Guatemala that same year. In 2012, it expanded to Honduras, followed by Panama in 2018. In 2024, School the World expanded operations to the Philippines as part of its “Moonshot 2030” initiative, which aims to double its impact by reaching over 84,000 children in the next five years.[1]
The model was initially piloted with support from local governments and corporate partners. Its holistic approach—combining infrastructure development, community engagement, and learning supports—has been continuously refined based on rigorous monitoring and community feedback.[2]

Mission and Philosophy

[edit]

The mission of School the World is “to disrupt extreme poverty through the power of quality education.” The organization believes that all children love to learn, that parents want a better future for their children, and that teachers prefer success over apathy. Its programs emphasize shared responsibility across families, communities, and governments.[3]

School the World’s core programming includes:

  • Early Childhood Development: Engages parents and trains community volunteers to support developmental milestones for children ages 0–6.
  • Primary Education: Builds safe, child-friendly schools and equips them with classroom libraries and playgrounds. Teachers receive two years of training focused on literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional learning.
  • Parental Engagement: Offers a structured curriculum that trains parents to become active participants in their children’s education. Parents also co-invest in books and school materials through a five-year matching grant model.
  • Scholarships & Alternative Education: Supports students beyond primary school through middle school scholarships and flexible education programs for older learners and parents.
  • Student & Corporate Service Programs: Offers immersive service-learning trips for high school students and corporate partners to contribute to school construction and cross-cultural understanding.[4]

According to School the World’s 2024 Annual Report, the organization has:

  • Built 162 schools and 91 playgrounds
  • Established 945 classroom libraries
  • Served more than 170,000 children
  • Provided over 2,000 scholarships across Central America[1]

The organization’s tutoring program—part of its post-pandemic learning recovery strategy—was named one of the top 100 global education innovations by the Finnish nonprofit HundrED in 2024, 2025, and 2026.https://hundred.org/en/innovations/school-the-world-s-accelerated-learning-program]

School the World collaborates with local mayors, ministries of education, and international partners. In the Philippines, it partners with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation to reach underserved island communities. [5]
Corporate and nonprofit partners have included IvyWise[6], Flywire[7], IMG Global[8], Envisage International, and Globalization Partners[9].
