2025 mass shooting terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia
On 14 December 2025 a mass shooting and terrorist attack occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, during a Hanukkah celebration hosted by the Chabad of Bondi at the Bondi Beach Park Playground.
Multiple gunshots were reported in the late afternoon near Campbell Parade, prompting widespread panic as civilians sought shelter. The New South Wales Police Force responded to the incident and urged members of the public to avoid the area and take shelter while the situation unfolded. Reports indicate that many shots were fired and that multiple people were injured, although details regarding casualties are unclear. Videos of the incident showed two men dressed in black firing upon crowds, reportedly with shotguns.
The shooting is the deadliest in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania.
Background
Bondi Beach is one of Australia’s most popular seaside areas and a well-known attraction for tourists and nightlife in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The shooting happened at a time when security concerns were already high in Australia because of earlier serious violent incidents in Sydney, including the 2024 stabbings at Westfield Bondi Junction.[4]
Some of the victims were attending the annual Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach and Dover Heights, organized by Chabad.[5][6] The incident took place during the first night of Hanukkah, when a community event (“Chanukah by the Sea”) was scheduled nearby.[5]
Attack
Videos of the incident showed two men dressed in black firing upon crowds, reportedly with shotguns.[7] Emergency services were first called to the scene around 18:45 (AEDT).[8] New South Wales Police released a statement at 18:57 confirming an incident was being responded to, and urged the public to avoid the area.[9]
One of the perpetrators was tackled from behind and disarmed by a male civilian while aiming down his sight.[10]
An explosive device was found by police, and is currently being investigated by the NSW bomb squad.[citation needed]
Investigation
New South Wales Police made two arrests, another attacker died during a shootout with police.[7][2] They urged the public to avoid the area while the situation remained a developing incident. Emergency services have treated various injured people at the scene, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting amid ongoing public safety operations.[5]
Police declared the shooting a terrorist incident.[11]
Casualties
New South Wales premier Chris Minns confirmed at least 13 people were killed, including one of the shooters, and at least 29 were injured, including at least two police officers.[2][11][12][13]
Perpetrators
Photographs showed two men dressed in black standing on a bridge.[12] New South Wales Police made two arrests.[7][2] One of the perpetrators was killed at the scene and the other was shot and left in a critical condition.[14]
Reactions
Domestic
New South Wales premier Chris Minns stated that “[t]he reports and images coming out of Bondi tonight are deeply distressing” and encouraged people to follow the directions of police.[2] Prime minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as “shocking and distressing” and noted that “[his] thoughts are with every person affected”.[2] Minster for Home Affairs Tony Burke called the shooting an “appalling act of violence”.[11]
In response to hearing about the shooting targeting a Chabad event on the beach, Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory said: “This is an attack on the Jewish community deeply that pains us as a community.”[15] President of the Zionist Federation of Australia Jeremy Leibler, while speaking to The Jerusalem Post, said that 2,000 members of the Jewish community gathered to celebrate and light the first candle of Hanukkah. He added: “Let me be clear. An attack on Jews celebrating their faith is an attack on Australia itself. It is an assault on our values, our social cohesion, and the basic right of people to gather without fear.”[16]
The Australian National Imams Council also have condemned the shooting, stating that “[t]his is a moment for all Australians, including the Australian Muslim community, to stand together in unity, compassion, and solidarity, rejecting violence in all its forms and affirming our shared commitment to social harmony and the safety of all Australians.”[11]
International
Israeli President Isaac Herzog sent his condolences to the Jewish community and quoted saying “We repeat our alerts time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of antisemitism which is plaguing Australian society.”[10] Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that he was “appalled” by the attack.[17] Former prime minister of Israel Naftali Bennett said the attack was a “moment of grief, and time for accountability”.[17]
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon released a statement, calling Australia and New Zealand “…closer than friends, we’re family”. He was quoted saying “I am shocked by the distressing scenes at Bondi, a place that Kiwis visit every day… My thoughts, and the thoughts of all New Zealanders, are with those affected.”[18]
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch, and leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage all condemned the incident.[17]
United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee issued a statement saying the attack was “horrific”.[17]
