AL-KO Vehicle Technology Group is a Germany-based manufacturer of chassis technology and related components for trailers, caravans and motorhomes, and some commercial, agricultural and construction vehicle applications.[1] It operates as a business unit of DexKo Global, following the combination of AL-KO Vehicle Technology and Dexter Axle that completed in January 2016.[2][3]
History
Origins and early internationalisation (1931–1960s)
AL-KO traces its origins to 11 November 1931, when master locksmith Alois Kober took over a small locksmith’s shop in Kötz, Bavaria.[1] According to the company, it expanded from locksmithing into a small industrial business during the 1950s and developed products including handbrake components and overrun braking systems.[1]
The company cites early international expansion beginning with Austria in 1961, with further subsidiaries in England, France, Italy and Switzerland established in 1970.[1]
Expansion in caravan and motorhome technologies (1970s–2015)
From the 1970s, AL-KO describes a greater focus on caravan and leisure vehicle components, including developments in overrun braking (including reverse capability) and later chassis solutions for motorhomes.[1] The company highlights the introduction of products such as the AKS stabiliser coupling range and the ATC electronic stabilisation system as part of its leisure vehicle product portfolio.[1]
Integration into DexKo (2016–present)
The strategic combination of Dexter Axle and AL-KO Vehicle Technology completed in January 2016, forming DexKo Global Inc., with the Dexter and AL-KO brands continuing under the DexKo group structure.[2] In July 2021, Brookfield Business Partners announced an agreement to acquire DexKo Global for US$3.4 billion, and the transaction subsequently closed later in 2021.[4][5]
Relationship to the AL-KO brand group
The AL-KO brand has been used by separate companies including AL-KO Gardentech, AL-KO Vehicle Technology Group and AL-KO Airtech.[6] Industry partner communications have described AL-KO Vehicle Technology and the AL-KO Group (Gardentech/Airtech) as independent groups following the separation and the Dexter combination period.[7] (AL-KO Air Technology, part of AL-KO Airtech, was acquired by Trane Technologies in 2022.)[8]
Operations
AL-KO Vehicle Technology states that it operates globally as part of DexKo, and cites international expansion including the establishment of branches in the United States (1983) and Australia (1986).[1] DexKo describes itself as a global supplier of trailer running gear and chassis assemblies, formed through the combination of Dexter and AL-KO Vehicle Technology.[2]
Brands and acquisitions
Brands
AL-KO Vehicle Technology markets products under a number of brands within the wider DexKo group. DexKo’s brand listing includes AL-KO Vehicle Technology, SAWIKO, Winterhoff, Bradley Doublelock, Brink, E&P Hydraulics, and electronics brands including CBE and Nordelettronica, among others.[9] AL-KO Vehicle Technology’s corporate materials also identify Bradley as a brand focused on trailer and hitch components.[10] In 2016, AL-KO Kober stated that it continued its investment in the Bradley Doublelock and Dixon-Bate brands in the United Kingdom.[11]

Products
AL-KO Vehicle Technology’s product range covers chassis and running-gear components for trailers, caravans and motorhomes, together with related coupling, braking, suspension, support/levelling and electronic stability systems.[22] In its published company history, AL-KO traces its move from metalworking into series production through handbrake components (from the 1950s) and subsequently overrun braking systems (surge brakes) for trailers.[1]
Chassis and running gear
AL-KO supplies chassis and running-gear systems for trailers in the leisure and general trailer markets, including axles, suspension components and chassis parts, alongside related accessories.[22] In the motorhome sector, the company markets the AMC (AL-KO Motor Chassis) range, including low-frame chassis intended for coachbuilt motorhome bodies.[23] For commercial vehicles and transporters, AL-KO lists chassis variants and suspension offerings for bodybuilder and fleet applications, including low-frame chassis concepts marketed under names such as VARIO SPACE.[24][25]
Couplings, stabilisation and theft deterrence
AL-KO manufactures coupling heads and stabiliser couplings for towing applications, including products marketed as reducing trailer “snaking” (sway) through friction-based stabilisation.[22] Its product catalogue also groups security and anti-theft devices (including coupling-related products) as part of its trailer and leisure-vehicle accessories range.[22]
Braking systems
AL-KO supplies braking components for braked trailer running gear, including wheel-brake assemblies and service parts for the caravan and trailer market.[22] One marketed product line is the AAA Premium Brake, which AL-KO describes as a self-adjusting wheel-brake system for certain AL-KO brake types.[26] Consumer caravan media has covered AAA in the context of retrofit upgrades and towing performance.[27]
Electronic stability and trailer control
AL-KO markets ATC (AL-KO Trailer Control), an electronic stability product that monitors trailer movement and can apply braking intervention when stored thresholds are exceeded.[28] The system has been described in consumer caravan publications as using sensors to detect unwanted movement and applying the caravan’s brakes to help restore stability.[29] The Camping and Caravanning Club notes ATC’s introduction for AL-KO chassis in 2007 and discusses it alongside comparable systems offered by other running-gear manufacturers.[30]
Support and levelling systems
For motorhomes, AL-KO markets hydraulic support/levelling systems including HY4 and the LevelM range.[31][32] AL-KO’s LevelM Pro product description references E&P control technology mounted externally in a protective enclosure.[33] AL-KO also lists additional motorhome support systems in its published product categories.[34]
