William Joseph Vigar (born 22 October 2003 – 25 September 2025) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward for, Isthmian League Premier Division club Chichester City. He began his career in the youth academy at Arsenal before moving into non-league football.
Early life and youth career
[edit]
William Joseph Vigar was born in Worthing, England, in 2003. He joined the Arsenal youth academy in December 2017 at the age of 14.[1][2] He signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2022 but did not make a senior appearance.[3]
Vigar spent time on loan with Derby County’s under-21s and Eastbourne Borough during his Arsenal spell.[4] After leaving Arsenal in 2024, he joined Hastings United[5] before moving to Chichester City in 2025.[6]
On 20 September 2025, Vigar crashed into a concrete wall by accident while trying to keep the ball in play for Wingate & Finchley in a match against them in the Isthmian League Premier Division and sustained a life-threatening brain injury.[7] He was placed into a induced coma and surgically intervened,[8] but died on 25 September 2025.[3]
Arsenal described him as “quick, powerful and fiercely determined”.[8][3] Chichester City postponed their next fixture, and tributes were paid across English football.[9]
