Charlie Mitchell (born 1992) is an American Michelin-starred chef. He is the first Black Michelin-starred chef in New York City and the second Black executive chef in the United States to receive a star. Mitchell has received the Michelin Guide New York Young Chef Award, the James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York State, earned his first Michelin star at Brooklyn’s Clover Hill restaurant, and is executive chef of Manhattan’s two Michelin-starred Saga restaurant.
Mitchell was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992.[1][2] His family lived on the West Side of Detroit during Mitchell’s adolescence[3] and moved to Southfield, Michigan, when he was a teenager.[4] Mitchell credits his grandmother for his love of cooking.[5]
Mitchell began his career as a cook shortly after finishing college. He began working in 24 Grille, a bar & grill in Detroit,[6] before moving on to Forest Grill in Birmingham, MI, where he worked as sous chef. Mitchell moved to New York City in 2016,[4] where he attended culinary school briefly before leaving to continue working in the industry.[3][7] He has worked in multiple high-end restaurants, many with Michelin stars, throughout his career. In San Francisco he worked at Benu. In Washington, D.C., Mitchell helped to open Jônt, which now holds two Michelin stars,[8] and Bresca.[9] After moving to NYC, he held positions at Betony (now closed), Eleven Madison Park as chef de partie under Daniel Humm,[10] Per Se, Blue Hill (restaurant),[11] and One White Street, where Mitchell served as executive sous chef.[9][12]
In 2022, Mitchell joined Clay Castillo and Gabriel Merino as co-owner and partner of Clover Hill in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Clover Hill was his first executive chef position.[13][9] After joining Clover Hill, Mitchell was awarded the Michelin Guide New York Young Chef Award.[14] Also in 2022, Mitchell received his first Michelin star as executive chef at Clover Hill.[5] Mitchell is the first Black chef in NYC to receive the honor and only the second Black chef in the US to earn the distinction.[15] When asked in an interview with Today if he knew of the historic implications of his receiving the Michelin star, Mitchell admitted that he did not. He further commented:
You always think about the people, so many people have come before you. You just assume that someone has already done this; you know, it doesn’t cross your mind that you may be the first or second to do really anything, especially here in New York City […] I think a lot of times, we’re chasing a very different American dream, then to kind of put up with these aggressive environments that are often led by people who don’t look like us. [sic][7]
In 2024, Clover Hill was ranked 46 out of the 100 best restaurants in New York City by food critic Pete Wells, who highlighted Mitchell’s use of seasonal ingredients.[16] Also in 2024, Mitchell was awarded the James Beard Award for Best Chef, becoming the only chef to be awarded by the James Beard Foundation from the city that year.[17]
On October 2, 2025, Mitchell appeared on Bobby’s Triple Threat as the guest judge for the episode. He judged 3 rounds between Maneet Chauhan and “the Titans” – Michael Voltaggio, Brooke Williamson and Ayesha Nurdjaja. When introduced, Mitchell stated that he would be judging the dishes not only on taste. He stated, “Intentionality is also very important … being able to see the decisions that are made by the chef, and understand why you made those decisions, is important.”[18]
As of October 17, 2025[update], Mitchell is the executive chef of Saga, a two Michelin-starred restaurant in Manhattan, N.Y.[19][20] He took over the role of executive chef after founder James Kent unexpectedly died.[10]
