Colin Whitchurch 1957 – 2001
Colin Whitchurch was born in Torquay, England in 1957. He was the son of Richard and Sarah Whitchurch. Richard was a baker and a local wildlife enthusiast. In 1974 Colin moved to Dunedin, New Zealand with his parents. He studied ecology and law at the University of Otago but dropped out in 1976.
Colin’s claim to fame came in 1994 when he was instrumental in illegally bringing squirrels to Dunedin from England. [1] The squirrel population rapidly exploded and by 1995 constituted a major emergency for the City of Dunedin. In 1996, Colin was prosecuted by the Crown for his role in The Great Dunedin Squirrel Incident of 1995 and sentenced to 50 years of public service.[2] However, he died in 2001 due to a severe case of haemorrhoids.
