Crime Wave was a game that pushed the envelope in graphics and sound on the common PC, it was one of the first to use technolgy termed as ‘RealSound’. Of course most PC’s only had rudimentary tonal speakers, and software didn’t exist to emulate sound on the DOS sound device. Crime Wave was one of the first games that accomplished polytonal emulation on the PC speaker. It was also one of the first that ran in 256 colours.
The game itself revolved around a disgruntled Excop, that had to rescue the presidents duaghter. Somewhat like a ‘Bruce Willis’ film played out in panned depth scrolling action adventure.

Richard Sheffield writing for Compute! concluded that “Crime Wave is another example of a game that probably couldn’t be played on today’s videogame systems. It’s big, it’s action-packed, and it’s graphically sophisticated. It will wash you away.”[1] Computer and Video Games compared it to Narc and said that “if you’re a fan of the NARC coin-op, and you don’t mind the slightly slow pace of the action, take a look.”[2] S.F. Sparrow for PC Games said that “Crime Wave comes close to the power and intensity of full-size arcade games. Arcade enthusiasts will simply feast on it.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). German magazine Play Time rated the ST version at 70% and the PC version 69%,[3] while Power Play gave it only 38%,[4] and Aktueller Software Markt gave it a rating of only 2 out of 10.[5]
