Early life and education

Niladri Sekhar Dash was born on 31 December 1967 in Shabra, a village in the West Midnapur district of West Bengal, India. He grew up in a rural area close to the Odisha border, where sustained contact with Odia-speaking communities influenced his linguistic development alongside his native Bengali.
He completed his higher secondary education in 1985. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, under the University of Calcutta in 1988. In 1991, he completed a Master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Calcutta, where he placed second in his cohort. He received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the same university in 2001 for his doctoral research on corpus-based computational analysis of modern Bengali.
Following his postgraduate studies, Dash worked in teaching and academic support roles. Between 1993 and 1995, he was associated with the Technology Development for Indian Languages (TDIL)[3] programme of the Government of India in Bhubaneswar, contributing to language technology initiatives. During this period, he also undertook formal training in Natural Language Processing at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
In the late 1990s, Dash became involved in corpus development and digitization projects at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata[1]. He was later appointed as a Junior Technical Assistant, where he worked on the digitization of Bengali lexical resources. In 2005, he joined the Linguistic Research Unit of the institute. He was appointed Assistant Professor in July 2010 and subsequently promoted to Professor. He currently serves as Head of the Linguistic Research Unit.
Research and contributions

Niladri Sekhar Dash’s research spans corpus linguistics, language processing, language technology, digital lexicography, computer-assisted language teaching, indigenous language documentation, and digital humanities. His work also includes applied and clinical linguistic studies, particularly in relation to bilingual aphasia and neurodegenerative language disorders.
He has authored scholarly monographs, edited academic volumes, and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, edited collections, and conference proceedings. He has delivered invited lectures and taught academic courses at universities and research institutions in India and abroad.
Fellowships and Professional service

Niladri Sekhar Dash has held international research fellowships and visiting scholar appointments at academic institutions in the United Kingdom. In 2023, he was awarded a British Academy–Leverhulme Small Research Grant[2] for research focusing on language loss among bilingual aphasic patients.
He has contributed to national and international academic initiatives through editorial responsibilities, advisory roles, and participation in funded research projects supported by Indian and international agencies.
