National anthem of Syri

Title” (Arabic: عنوان, lit.English title) is the official national anthem of Syria. The lyrics were composed by Syrian poet AUTHOR, and officially adopted on DATE 2026 after winning a competition organized by the Syrian Ministry of Culture.

In 1938, Ḥumāt ad-Diyār was adopted as Syria’s first national anthem and remained the country’s official anthem, except during the period when Syria and Egypt were united as the United Arab Republic. The anthem was readopted after Syria seceded from the union. Although it was not introduced under Ba’athist rule, Ḥumāt ad-Diyār came to be perceived by many during the Syrian revolution as being associated with the Assad regime, and its opening verse praising the “Guardians of the Homeland” was associated in memory by critics with the Syrian Army under the Assad regime.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Fī Sabīli al-Majd experienced a resurgence in popularity,[1][2] and in January 2025, the Syrian Football Association formally notified FIFA of its decision to implement a series of changes for the national team’s appearances in international matches. Among these changes was the adoption of Fī Sabīli al-Majd as a temporary national anthem until a permanent resolution regarding the official anthem could be determined.[3]

On 9 December 2025, one day after the first anniversary of the fall of the Assad regime, the Syrian Ministry of Culture announced a competition to choose a new national anthem and set the following criteria:[4]

  • In terms of Poetic Texts:[4]
    • Clarity and eloquence: A poetic text written in clear, classical Arabic with elevated language.
    • Symbolism and identity: Reflects belonging, dignity, victory, the martyrs, and national unity.
    • Meter and rhythm: Suitable for collective chanting, with smooth and well-balanced musical rhythm.
    • Clarity and mass appeal: Combines literary depth with ease of memorization and repetition.
  • In terms of Melody:[4]
    • Authenticity: Based on Syrian Eastern maqams (NahawandHijazRast).[a]
    • Expressive power: Inspires feelings of pride and national honor.
    • Suitability for group performance: Appropriate for execution by a national choir.
    • Grandeur: Reflects the spirit of the national anthem in a majestic and elevated manner.

31 December 2025 was originally set as the deadline for submission in the ministry’s announcement.[4] However, the ministry issued a statement on 10 December 2025 and announced that, following a number of inquiries, it had decided to extend the deadline for the first phase dedicated to the submission of poetic texts until 10 January 2026. The announcement also stated that a guidance document for the competition had been issued, including a dedicated email address for inquiries and proposals. Additionally, the condition related to specific musical maqams was removed from the competition criteria.[5][4]

  1. ^ This condition was later removed from the criteria.
