Alba Tull is an American entrepreneur, investor, photographer, and space biology researcher. She is the co-founder of Breaking.com, a synthetic biology startup developing microorganisms that degrade plastic waste. Tull has contributed to NASA space biology programs and co-authored research published in Nature Reviews Bioengineering. She has also supported pediatric neuroscience and genetic disease research through philanthropic giving.

Space biology

Tull later worked with NASA on research related to the International Space Station’s Rodent Research Hardware System. The project studied mammalian biology in microgravity, including effects on bone density, muscle, immune function, and cellular processes.[1]

In 2025 she co-authored a review article in Nature Reviews Bioengineering titled “From rodents on the ISS to humans in commercial LEO”.[2]

Breaking.com

Tull co-founded Breaking.com with George Church of Harvard Medical School and the Wyss Institute. The company develops engineered microorganisms designed to break down plastic waste. Its MICROBE X-32 technology targets multiple plastic types and does not require pretreatment of materials.[3]

Photography

Tull began her career as a photographer. She worked in music and documentary photography, including serving as the principal photographer for the 2008 documentary film It Might Get Loud, directed by Davis Guggenheim and featuring Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Her photography has appeared in Rolling Stone and in coverage of White House events.[4]

Investment work

Tull founded First Light Capital Group to invest in bioscience and climate technology companies. Public descriptions note that the firm funds early-stage companies in biological technology and environmental applications.[5][6]

She is also the founder of AVT Ventures, established in 2010, and the founder and president of RampNRize.[7]

Philanthropy

Tull has directed philanthropic contributions toward pediatric neuroscience and genetic disease research programs. Reported gifts include more than two million dollars in support of Rett Syndrome and other neurological disorder studies.[8][9]

Board service

Tull serves on the board of the Jackie Robinson Foundation.[10] She is also a board member of the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.[11]
