Billie Bonevski is an Australian behavioural scientist and public health researcher known for her work in tobacco control, health equity, and preventive health. She is the Dean of Research and Director of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) at Flinders University, South Australia. Bonevski has led national and international research programs in smoking cessation and health behaviour change, contributing extensively to policy and practice in chronic disease prevention.
Early life and education

Bonevski was educated at the University of Newcastle, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (1991) and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours, First Class) in 1993, receiving the WH Ward Prize for Best Applied Honours Thesis. Her honours research examined attentional shift and obsessive–compulsive disorder using event-related potentials. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Behavioural Science in Relation to Medicine from the University of Newcastle in 1997, with a thesis titled Examination of preventive care in general practice. Bonevski later undertook partial studies toward a Master of Business Administration.
Academic and professional career

Following her doctorate, Bonevski completed a World Health Organization-funded postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University’s Cochrane Collaboration Tobacco Addiction Review Group and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 1997. She subsequently held research roles at the NSW Cancer Council and the Newcastle Institute of Public Health, before joining the University of Newcastle as a research academic.
Between 2011 and 2018, she was awarded consecutive Cancer Institute NSW and NHMRC Career Development Fellowships, focusing on reducing tobacco-related health inequities. In 2016 she was promoted to Professor of Public Health at the University of Newcastle and later appointed the university’s inaugural Women in Science Chair (2019–2021), leading gender equity and diversity initiatives across science, engineering, and health faculties.
In 2021, Bonevski joined Flinders University as Professor of Public Health and Discipline Group Lead, overseeing eight disciplines within the College of Medicine and Public Health. She also served as Interim Director of the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) and later as Interim Director of the Flinders Clinical Trials Unit. In December 2023, she was appointed Dean of Research and Director of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute, providing strategic leadership for more than 600 researchers and overseeing the institute’s relocation to the new Flinders Health and Medical Research Building in 2024.
Research and impact

Bonevski’s research focuses on health behaviour change, smoking cessation, and the social determinants of health. She has been Chief Investigator on more than 130 grants totalling over A$67 million in competitive funding, including NHMRC, MRFF, and international sources such as the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases and Pfizer GRAND. Her work has informed national and international tobacco control strategies and collaborated with partners including Cancer Council NSW, Lung Foundation Australia, Heart Foundation, Stroke Foundation, and multiple state health departments.
Bonevski has co-authored more than 270 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 70 per cent of which appear in top-quartile journals. According to Scopus, her work has received more than 7,000 citations, with an h-index of 35 (46 in Google Scholar). In 2022, she was named one of only two Australians in the world’s top 20 smoking-cessation researchers, and she ranks among the top 0.01 per cent of authors worldwide in this field. Her research has been featured in Nature, New Scientist, the Medical Journal of Australia, and Oxford University podcasts.
Leadership and service

Internationally, Bonevski has played a major role in the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT), serving as Founding President of the Oceania Chapter (2017–2020) and as an elected member of the global Board of Directors (2020–2023). She has promoted greater Indigenous representation within SRNT governance and led the removal of tobacco-industry affiliations from the society. She is also a co-director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence on Achieving the Tobacco Endgame (2021–2026), hosted by the University of Queensland.
Bonevski serves on numerous professional and advisory committees, including the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia’s E-Cigarettes and Cancer Working Group, SA Research Directors Alliance, and Flinders Foundation Research Committee. She has been a reviewer and panel member for NHMRC, ARC, MRFF, and international research councils, and contributes to public health consultations at state and national levels.
Mentorship and supervision

Bonevski is recognised for her mentorship of early- and mid-career researchers. She has supervised more than 35 higher-degree research students, including 15 PhD completions, and received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and Other Drugs (APSAD) in 2018. Many of her students have since obtained national research fellowships and academic appointments.
