BIOPAP S.r.l. Società Benefit (/ˈbaɪ.oʊ.pæp/, Italian: [ˈbi.oˌpap]), commonly known as BIOPAP, is an Italian company based in Settimo Milanese, Lombardy, Italy. Founded in 2001 by Michelangelo Anderlini, Giuseppe Anderlini, Maria Teresa Brassiolo and Filippo Rossi, the company specializes in the production of biodegradable, compostable and thermoformed trays for food, made out of carton board.[2]

The legal and operational headquarters of BIOPAP are located at Via Thomas Alva Edison 237, 20019 Settimo Milanese (MI), Lombardy.[3]

The headquarters are positioned at coordinates 45°27′41″N 9°04′18″E / 45.4614228°N 9.071786°E / 45.4614228; 9.071786.[4]

BIOPAP was established in 2001 with the aim of providing sustainable alternatives to conventional food packaging. Over the years, the company has expanded internationally, supplying its compostable packaging systems to sectors such as ready meals, institutional catering, airline and rail catering, and retail deli counters.

In 2023, BIOPAP inaugurated a new production facility operating with zero CO₂ emissions, zero waste, and powered entirely by renewable electricity, effectively doubling its manufacturing capacity. The same year, the company became a Benefit Company under Italian law, formally integrating social and environmental objectives into its business model.[1]

BIOPAP organizes its activities into the following business areas:

Foodservice packaging

[edit]

BIOPAP produces compostable trays and containers designed for professional catering, such as in schools, hospitals, and large-scale canteens. The products are suitable for freezing, oven use, and microwave heating.[5] The trays are certified as compostable according to UNI EN 13432:2002.[6]

Ready-meal and industrial packaging

[edit]

The company supplies sustainable packaging solutions to the food industry, with trays specifically adapted for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and vacuum-sealed systems. These products are widely used by ready-meal producers and large-scale food processors, combining durability with environmentally friendly materials.[6][7]

Customized sustainable solutions

[edit]

BIOPAP develops tailored compostable packaging systems for businesses seeking alternatives to plastic-based materials. This includes branded packaging projects and designs adapted for logistics, food delivery services, and retail chains.[8]

Sustainability and production

[edit]

The company operates with manufacturing facilities powered entirely by renewable energy. BIOPAP focuses on closed-loop production processes, sourcing renewable raw materials from certified European forests and ensuring that its products are both recyclable and compostable.[9]

[edit]

BIOPAP’s legal and corporate structure enables it to act as a standalone entity in manufacturing, innovation and international business.

Corporate mission, strategy and positioning

[edit]

BIOPAP positions itself as a specialist in high-performance, sustainable food-packaging solutions, emphasising compostable, biodegradable and recyclable materials developed using an eco-design approach. The corporate strategy encompasses sourcing raw materials from renewable European forests, integrating circular economy principles, and offering temperature-resistant packaging systems (for example from -80 °C to +215 °C) to sectors including meals-ready-to-eat, institutional catering, delivery, airline/rail and retail deli counters.

Sustainability and corporate responsibility

[edit]

Sustainability is central to BIOPAP’s corporate affairs: the company emphasises the eco-design of its packaging, the use of certified renewable materials (for example PEFC-certified, USDA bio-based) and processes aligned with biological circularity. While detailed corporate responsibility reports are not publicly cited in the sources examined, the company’s trajectory (e.g., a new zero-emission facility in 2023) and benefit-company status underline its commitment to integrating environmental and social dimensions within its business model.

Internationalisation and sector engagement

[edit]

BIOPAP has expanded beyond the domestic Italian market, supplying systems worldwide for a range of packaging applications. According to trade event information, it participates in international exhibitions (e.g., Gulf region) under the branding “BIOPAP® – leader in sustainable high performance innovative food packaging solutions”. The company is listed among the members of Italian regional commerce associations, reinforcing its institutional connections and export orientation.

Institutional relations and communications

[edit]

BIOPAP’s corporate affairs also involve relations with institutional stakeholders (trade associations, commerce chambers) and communications via web presence (official website, LinkedIn). The LinkedIn page identifies the company as “Naturalmente tecnologico”.  The official website provides primary contact details including address, telephone, email and company registration information. Effective corporate affairs practise in this context likely includes regulatory compliance (e.g., corporate filings), transparency with regard to investors and customers, and trade‐communication channels, although no full CSR (corporate social responsibility) or annual report details were located in the reviewed sources.

Benefit Company status and corporate identity

[edit]

As part of its corporate affairs, BIOPAP has adopted a legal structure aligned with its sustainability objectives (e.g., becoming a Benefit Company under Italian law), thereby formalising the integration of profit with social and environmental goals. (Note: while this specific fact was not located in the sources accessed here, it is likely aligned with the company’s sustainability narrative.) Corporate identity also highlights technology, performance, and “natural” materials (“Naturalmente tecnologico”) which guides the branding and stakeholder communications.

Sustainability and certifications

[edit]

  • ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management System — BIOPAP is certified for compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 standard for quality management systems. The certification was issued by Certiquality, an accredited certification body recognised by ACCREDIA, the Italian National Accreditation Body.[10][11][12]
  • UNI EN 13432:2002 – Compostability (European Standard) — BIOPAP’s packaging is certified compostable under the European standard EN 13432:2002, which defines requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation. The certification was granted by the Consorzio Italiano Compostatori (CIC) under the “Compostabile CIC” mark, managed in collaboration with Certiquality.[13][14]
  • BPI Compostability Certification (North America) — BIOPAP is certified by the Products Institute (BPI) for compliance with ASTM D6400 and D6868 compostability standards used in North America.[15]
  • PEFC Chain of Custody – Sustainable Fibre Sourcing — BIOPAP holds a PEFC Chain of Custody certification for responsibly sourced cellulose materials. The certification is registered under PEFC Italia and complies with PEFC ST 2002:2020 standards.[16][17]
  • Aticelca 501 – Paper Recyclability (UNI 11743:2019) — BIOPAP’s trays are certified by Aticelca (Italian Technical Association for Paper and Pulp) for recyclability with paper. Tests were conducted in accordance with the UNI 11743:2019 / Aticelca 501 laboratory method for coated paper packaging.[18]

The company is committed continuously to the research of new materials to produce products which will have less impact on the environment. After years of research, BIOPAP has developed an innovative patented technology, that has won an award in 2022. This new technology is called MAP. The MAP permits to create food trays entirely made by cellulose-based paper and vacuum-sealed with BIO heat shrink film, these two characteristics make them entirely recyclable and compostable. The barrier properties of BIOPAP MAP make it possible to maintain residual oxygen (O₂) concentrations below 1% after 30 days. The patented structure ensures high barrier performance even with reduced thicknesses, contributing to a more efficient use of renewable resources. This advanced trays can also resist to extreme temperatures (from -80 °C, up to +145 °C). [6][19]

BIOPAP Easy System is an all-in-one system for food packaging and sealing. It is specifically developed for the food service industry, especially within the takeaway and delivery operations. The system consists of three main components: compostable packaging, a semi-automatic heat-sealing machine, and compostable sealing film. BIOPAP LC containers are made of renewable resources and they are available in three sizes with capacities of 455 ml, 595 ml, and 865 ml. They are suitable for storing food in refrigerators and freezers, as well as for heating in traditional and microwave ovens. These containers are certified as compostable according to the European standard EN 13432 and can be recycled with paper waste. The heat-sealing machine used in the system is a semi-automatic benchtop device equipped with digital control of process parameters such as sealing time and temperature. The device includes a modular mould that enables the simultaneous sealing of three containers and rapid switching between the different formats. The operating cycle includes automatic sealing, film advancement, and cutting. The sealing film is made from compostable material and it fits with all BIOPAP LC containers. The use of a single film width reduces the need for reel changes during operation. The BIOPAP Easy System offers numerous concrete benefits: high productivity with more than 200 sealed meals per day in less than two seconds each; maximum hygiene and food safety, since the sealed container can only be opened by the final consumer; eliminating contamination risks during transport and delivery; service optimization, as the container also becomes the plate, reducing waste and the need for additional tableware; and finally, genuine, certified environmental sustainability. It’s a system that preserves food quality right up to consumption while fully respecting the environment. [20][21]
