Chungju Muslim Cemetery (Korean: 충주 무슬림 공동묘지) is a Muslim burial section established within Jindallae Memorial Park (진달래공원) in Angseong-myeon, Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Opened in July 2004, the site was created to provide burial space that accommodates Islamic funeral rites in a country where burial options for Muslims were previously limited. The initiative was organised by the Korea Muslim Federation and reported to have received external funding. [1][2]
In 2004 the Korea Muslim Federation announced the establishment of a dedicated Muslim burial section within Jindallae Memorial Park. Contemporary news reports described the plot as the first in South Korea specifically set aside to facilitate Islamic burial practices, and indicated the area of the site at roughly 1,100–1,150 pyeong (approximately 3,630–3,800 square metres). The project aimed to provide an affordable and logistically feasible option for Muslims who required in-ground burial rather than cremation. [3][4]
Location and layout
[edit]
The Muslim burial area is located within the grounds of Jindallae Memorial Park in Angseong-myeon, Chungju. The park is a larger commercial/municipal memorial complex divided into sections; one of these sections was designated for Muslim burials when the plot was created. Published descriptions and regional guides identify the Muslim section as a distinct area within the park. [5]
