CloudCheckr is an American cloud management software company headquartered in Rochester, New York. The company provides tools for cloud cost optimization, security, compliance, automation, and governance for organizations operating on public cloud services.

History

CloudCheckr was founded in 2011 by Aaron C. Newman and Aaron Klein.[1] Newman, a serial entrepreneur, served as CEO during the company’s early years and later transitioned to executive ehairman.

The company expanded from Amazon Web Services (AWS) support to a multi-cloud platform incorporating Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and others.[1] In June 2019, CloudCheckr appointed Tim McKinnon as CEO, while Newman became executive chairman.[2]

In October 2021, NetApp announced its acquisition of CloudCheckr, integrating the product into its Spot by NetApp CloudOps portfolio.[3]

Products

CloudCheckr develops a cloud management platform offering:

  • Cost management and optimization tools for analyzing cloud expenditure and identifying inefficiencies.[1]
  • Security and compliance monitoring using continuous configuration checks and industry standards.[1]
  • Automation and governance tools for policy enforcement and remediation.[3]

CloudCheckr advertises more than 500 built-in “best practice checks” for cloud environments.[1]

Funding

The company raised approximately US$50 million in a 2017 Series A round led by Level Equity, followed by a US$15 million Series B round in 2019.[3]

As of 2021, CloudCheckr reportedly had about 600 customers and around US$29 million in annual revenue, with a staff of roughly 150.

NetApp’s 2021 acquisition of CloudCheckr was part of its broader strategy to expand FinOps capabilities and cloud resource optimization.[3] Industry analysts noted that the combination of CloudCheckr’s cost visibility and Spot’s automation offered enterprises a more comprehensive FinOps solution.[4]

Philanthropy

Co-founder Aaron Newman has contributed to educational and STEM programs, including establishing a US$25,000 endowed STEM scholarship at Monroe Community College.[5]
