Deep Fridge is a 2025 Indian Bengali film. It won the “Best Bengali Film” Award at the 71st National Film Awards.^[1]

Deep Fridge was announced in March 2023. It marked the second collaboration between Abir and Tanusree after Flat No. 609 (Year ta add korte hobe). The supporting cast including Debjani Chatterjee, Anuradha Mukherjee, Shoaib Kabeer and Lakshya Bhattacharya was announced along with it. The story is about a divorced couple and their journey about post divorce child parenting. Director said in an intreview “In “Deep Fridge” both Swarnava (Abir) and Mili (Tnusree) are victims of this vicious, prejudiced idea of a perfectly happy marriage. Will they be able to seek closure post their divorce and see things with more clarity in an effort to build a guilt free future for both of them separately which is fair to their only child Tatai.” He added “Divorce has become a common aspect of today’s society than ever before yet we refuse to talk about it. I’ve seen couples around me who are not happy in their marriages and in the course of time they got divorced. But one thing has always absorbed me, does the essence of the old connection wane away completely or it lasts somewhere deep inside the heart forever. So ‘Deep Fridge’ chronicles the journey of such a couple with a child post their divorce.”^[9]

The poster of the film released on 6 October 2025. (Date confirm korte hobe, month ta confirmed ache) The film is a poignant and emotional drama that deals with the complexities of human emotions, fragile relationships and silence that lingers despite a new beginning in our life.^[10]

Film screened at the Telangana Bengali Film Festival(TBFF0 – Aayna 2025. Tanusree Chakraborty won the Best Actress award at the festival. Tanusree in an interview “for Deep Fridge, it was a prolonged process; when I got the script, I immediately got curious and started asking a range of questions to really understand Milli as a person. Why is she saying this? Why is she behaving like that? What has she carried from her childhood to the present? So, by asking these questions, I really connected well with the character.”^[11]

Abir said in an interview that he had initially said no to the film. He added “There were some date issues and things weren’t aligning. But Arjun [Dutta] was persistent — he kept at it, and I eventually gave in. I am glad I did. We shot the film in 2023.” (Indirect speech e convert kora jete parey) The film is largely revolving around the two characters. Abir added “It became a very collaborative process. I would return from the shoot and discuss the next day’s scenes with Arjun. I even gave my inputs — it was creatively very fulfilling. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves.” The film was not released in the theatres despite getting national and critical success. For that, Abir mentioned “It’s unfortunate, but there are multiple factors. Those backing the film weren’t sure if the Bengali audience was ready for a film like this. But hopefully, that will change now. When a film wins such a prestigious award, it definitely piques audience interest.” (Indirect speech e convert korte hobe)^[12]

Abir Chatterjee won “Best Actor” Award at the Telangana Bengali Film Festival (TBFF) – Aayna 2025. Film also screened at “International Film Festival of India” in Goa and the “Habitat Film Festival”.^[13]

Won Best Bengali Film Award at 71 National Film Awards on Friday. Film deals with post divorced life and parental care for their child between a couple – the emotions and pain attached with it. The filming was done in 2023. Abir chatterjee shared his experience upon “Deep Fridge” winning a National award “The way I personally (bishleshon kori) (English korte hobe) a character, the kind of script to which I say yes, probably those decisions are on the right path. This award gave me assurance. There is no award greater than the National Film Award in India. Winning that is a huge achievement.”^[14]

(Won award information)- Director Arjunn Dutta said regarding winning this award “Ekkothay ami khub obhibhuto a khobore. Still can’t believe it. My mother fell severely ill during this film’s shooting. She was diagonised with a rare disease. Later, she passed away within one year. I believe that his award is my mother’s blessings. She must have done something from abode and made us win this award.” Tanusree said regarding winning this award “Darun lagche. Ekkothay uchhashito. I always try to give my best in a film. I have never worked keeping in mind about the outcome of a film. Congratulations to the whole team.”^[15] Abir added that “I am extremely happy and I don’t have words to express my happiness.” Tanusree added “This year, there were so many good Bengali films. “Deep Fridge” has won out of them. Arjunn deserved this. This is a very anonder bishoy for me.”^[16]

Director said in an interview “This is also special because I lost my mum. I lost her within a span of few months while I was shooting Deep Fridge. I have seen her immense struggle while I was shooting the film and I still think and believe Maa must have pulled some strings from up there. I am dedicating my award my mum. Shouldn’t we dedicate everything to our mums first?” Film premiered at the 54th International Film Festival of India (2023) as a part of the Panorama section.^[17]

Film was scheduled to release in the first half of 2024. The director shared in an interview about how he got the idea to make this film “There are so many couples who are unhappy in their marriages and many of them get divorced even after spending several years together. But still, as couples or as a society, we are hesitant to talk about that. I feel that instead of being locked in unhappy marriages it’s always better to get separated. But in the process, can we forget our first love totally or is flame still flickering there somewhere. That’s the thought from where the story started brewing. When I conceived the story and wrote it, I personally was going through a very difficult phase in life. My mom had fallen sick and I lost my grandmother with whom I was extremely close. I saw a lot of couples around me, getting their separate ways and this story came out from all that and more.” He also added that Abir and Tanusree were his first choice of actors for the film from the very beginning. He thanked the actors for being cooperative during the shooting despite of the hot weather and other constraints.^[18]

Colours of Dream Entertainment. Won National Award. Released in the theatres on Friday. He added in an interview regarding winning the National Award for Best Bengali film “Very happy, very proud. But at the same time, the responsibility also goes higher because people who are serious about films — be it the audience, film people, critics — they now want to watch Deep Fridge. And with the film, they also want to understand what Bengal is doing — performance-wise, storytelling-wise, treatment-wise.” The film is a modern relationship drama. A divorced couple meet five years after parting ways, stay a night at the woman’s house and confront the unspoken feelings. The refrigerator occurs as a recurring metaphor. Director approached Abir for the film in 2020. But he had date clashes and certain observations about the storyline. So, initially Abir said no to the film owing to date issues. But director reapproached him after two months. Abir said that his wife urged him to listen to the director. Abir said that he signed the film in order to respect the confidence in Arjunn about the fact that he came back, and was serious about casting him in the project. Every night after the shooting, Abir would rehearse the lines, call the director, suggest changes and negotiate them. “Deep Fridge” was shot in April 2023.^[21]

“We are witnessing such termination of relationships almost every other day. But what tickles my thought process is that do these couple and their stories cease to exist totally or does the essence of their past connection still lingers somewhere deep down within their hearts? Deep Fridge explores that area of thought.” said the director, as his driving idea behind making the film. The film was officially announced in March 2023. Tanusree Chakraborty regarding her character in the film “Mili is extremely emotional, and is like a coconut, has a tough shell but is extremely soft inside. and there is this huge impact of their childhood. Mili has a past, and because of that incident or situation in her childhood, has made her how she is today, or why is she thinking on those lines.”^[23]

Director Arjunn Dutta dedicat4ed the National Award to his mother, who passed away during the making of the film. She was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, just as the filming began. Director posted this emotional note on Fcaebook.^[24]

The music and background score of the film has been composed by Soumya Rit. He has also penned the lyrics. The songs have been sung by Mekhla Dasgupta, Porshia Sen and Kajol Chatterjee.
