Elay Mammadov (born September 18, 1985, in Aliabad village, Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan) is an Azerbaijani painter based in Milan, Italy. He is best known as the founder of the art movement Reflectionism, a contemporary painting style exploring the interaction of light and brush texture on color surfaces.
Early life and education
Elay Mammadov was born in 1985 in Aliabad, a village in the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan. He graduated from the Faculty of Art at the Nakhchivan State University, where he received his initial academic training in fine arts. He later continued his education at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Art in Baku.
After completing his studies in Azerbaijan, Mammadov was invited to an interview and examination at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy. Having successfully passed the admission process with high marks, he pursued his advanced studies there and later graduated with distinction. Since finishing his education, he has lived in Milan, where he continues his artistic practice and collaborates with several well-known art galleries across Europe.
Career
Mammadov initially created monochrome paintings, using single-color surfaces and minimal figurative elements. In 2002, he completed a white monochrome female portrait and a black monochrome male portrait.
Elay Mammadov is known for developing the painting style Reflektionism.[1] He has exhibited his work internationally, including in Italy.[2] His early monochrome works have been discussed in art publications.[3] His exhibitions have also been featured by Italian galleries.[4] His profile is listed among contemporary international artists.[5]

Reflectionism
Reflectionism is an art movement and painting style founded by Elay Mammadov. It focuses on the visual and conceptual interaction of light with the painted surface, particularly through the directionality of brushstrokes. The term originates from the Latin riflessione, meaning “reflection.”
In Reflectionism, natural light flickers across brushstrokes and reflects toward the viewer, creating dynamic light–shadow relationships that change depending on the observer’s position. The movement emphasizes light as an immaterial yet active agent in shaping visual experience.
Although in optics the phenomenon of bending light is called refraction, Mammadov’s artistic concept centers on the reflective dialogue between surface and illumination. In this style, the orientation of brushstrokes serves as a descriptive tool — not to create color relief, but to enable light to shimmer and animate the painted surface.
Mammadov’s development of Reflectionism represents a contemporary contribution to modern painting, blending scientific observation with aesthetic experimentation to redefine the relationship between color, form, and light[6]
