Fictional character from Pride and Prejudice
Georgiana Darcy is a fictional character in Jane Austen‘s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. She is the younger sister of Fitzwilliam Darcy and is known for her gentle, shy disposition and her near-elopement with George Wickham. Georgiana’s story adds depth to Darcy’s character and highlights themes of virtue, protection, and social expectations in Regency England.
Fictional biography
In Austen’s novel, Georgiana is described as being “about fifteen or sixteen,” tall, and remarkably pretty, though extremely timid. A talented pianist and kind-hearted young woman, she was nearly deceived by George Wickham, who sought her fortune. Her brother intervened, and she lives under his care at Pemberley in Derbyshire. Georgiana later becomes a friend to Elizabeth Bennet, welcoming her into the Darcy family after Elizabeth’s marriage to Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Character traits
- Modest, shy, and good-natured
- Exceptionally skilled at the pianoforte
- Deeply affectionate toward her brother
- A symbol of innocence and moral growth in the narrative
In adaptations
Georgiana Darcy has appeared in numerous film, television, and modern adaptations of Pride and Prejudice. Some versions expand her role, while others retain her as a gentle background character.
Legacy
Though a minor figure in the novel, Georgiana Darcy’s role has grown in prominence through adaptations that grant her more dialogue and emotional development. Modern versions, such as Death Comes to Pemberley and Netflix’s 2025 series, portray her as a young woman striving for independence beyond her brother’s shadow.
