Htet Myat Thu (Burmese: ထက်မြတ်သူ; 15 March 1996 – 21 August 2024) was a Burmese freelance journalist and reporter known for his reporting on local issues in Mon State. He was killed during a military raid on his home in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, Myanmar.[1][2]

Early Life and Education

Htet Myat Thu was born in Myanmar. He pursued studies in Business Information Technology at KMD (NCC Education Center) and English through distance education at Dagon University.[3] While his formal education was in these fields, he developed an interest in journalism and news reporting, which he actively pursued through freelance work with local media outlets.[4][5]

Career

Htet Myat Thu began his journalism career in 2020, contributing to local media outlets such as Than Lwin Times and National Voice. His reporting focused on community issues and local developments in Mon State.[6][7] In 2021, he was arrested while covering a protest in Kyaikto and was imprisoned for over six months. He was released in a general amnesty and continued his journalistic work thereafter. [8][9][10]

Death

On 21 August 2024, Htet Myat Thu was killed during a military raid on his home in Kyaikto Township, Mon State, Myanmar.[11] The raid resulted in the deaths of two journalists, including Htet Myat Thu, and two members of the Kyaikto Revolution Force.[12][13] The military reportedly cremated the bodies without returning them to the families.[14][15][16]
