Jeffrey J. Perry is a Canadian emergency-medicine physician, researcher, and academic. He serves as the Department Head for the Emergency Department at The Ottawa Hospital and is a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Perry is also a full professor at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the School of Epidemiology and Public Health.[1][2]
Perry is recognised internationally for his work in developing and validating clinical decision rules in emergency medicine.[2] He is the Director of the Acute Care Research Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and has authored or co-authored over 275 peer-reviewed publications.[1] His research has contributed significantly to improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in emergency departments across Canada and internationally.
Research and impact
[edit]
Perry’s research focuses on evidence-based tools to enhance emergency care. He was instrumental in the derivation and validation of the Ottawa Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Rule (Ottawa SAH Rule), which helps clinicians safely rule out subarachnoid haemorrhage in patients presenting with acute headache.[3]
He later led a prospective implementation study that demonstrated how the rule’s use decreased lumbar-puncture rates and unnecessary hospital admissions.[4]
He also co-founded the Canadian Network of Emergency Research (NCER), a national collaboration designed to advance multicentre emergency-medicine studies and mentorship for clinical investigators.[1]
