The films title “Joto Kando Kolkatatei” has reference to Satyajit Ray’s “Joto Kando Kathmandute”. It has multiple references and allusions to the different Feluda novels written by Satyajit Ray. The first scene of the film which was shot in September 2023 – director tried to recreate the Park Street of 60’s Calcutta. The “Nightclub Song” was shot in Trincas, which is one of the oldest colonial era resturants iN cALCUTTA. Director attempted to bring forward the nightclub culture of the city and the lifestyle of the elite class. To recreate the authentic look of the 60s era for the sequence in the film, the director and his team of Suchismita Dasgupta, the costume designer and Ananda Adya ,the art director relied on old photopgraphs from the 60s era shared by the Trincas owner and the anecdotes which he has heard from his forefathers, which he told them. To suit the dressing, all the men were made to ear three piece suits with bow ties and the female were dressed in georgettes and chiffons with peral or diamond necklaces. The director mentoned in an interview “Apart from costumes, furniture and other light and décor pieces, appropriate crockery, cutlery, musical instruments, and many more accessories had to be procured to generate the correct ambience. (Otirokto line, pore alada korte hobe, eita director boleni) – Crooners sing along to a tune played by an orchestra or a jazz band, while liveried servers attend to guests.” Since, it is a busy resturant, they completed the shooting in the night. They had limited time since they could not let daylight to come in. Director spoke in an interview “I constantly balance the expenses with the required effect so that it didn’t turn out looking tacky or fake.” Besides the nightlife, other almost forgotten heritage were also displayed in the film, including Bourne and Shephers, one of the oldest running photgraphic studios in the world and multiple old churches. Suchiismita Dasgupta, the stylisyt and costume designer mentioned in an interview “We have tried to follow the fashion trend from that time. We have taken references of Bengali and English movies from that time. Roja’s dress and gloves were bought at a vintage store in Oxford. We used silk saris and long and midi dresses for the female crowd, while the men wore suits or trousers and dinner jackets. Paroma Banerjee was kind enough to lend us saris from her brand Kalakriti, as her signature print saris are very retro in nature, and went perfectly with the scene.” Parts of the shooting was done in Darjeeling.^[10]

The director mentioned in an interview that he thought about writing a story regarding the character of Topshe. He couln’t write a Feluda script owing to copyright issues. He later spoke with Sandip Ray and later wrote the complete script when his producre Firdausal Hasan inss=isted him to carry on wih the storu. Initially he named it “Hemenbabaur Heyali” but later chaneed it to Joto Kando Kolkatatei. Filming in Darjeeling and Kurseong. Teaser released.^[11]

The film waas announced with an announcement poster on 24 August 2023.^[12] (Cast and crew kader neoa hoyeche….seita bola ache….details add korte hobe….naam and work somet) The announcement revealed the final title of teh film along with the name of the lead casst and the director, editor, cinematogrpaher, art director, costume designer and music composer.^[13] It marked the Tollywood debut of actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed. It was scheduled to release in Durga Puja 2024.^[14]

In an interview, director said that with this film is both a tribute to Satyajit Ray and it is a original story itself, but has a flavor of the Feluda novels. He also added that it was the first time ever in his long career, that his film is releasing during the Durga Puja. ^[15]

The script was written long ago but he couldn’t start the film owing casting and production issues. Trailer was released at the PVR INOX in South City Mall. Pratim D Gupta was the host. Director was sick during the outdoor schedule in Darjeeling so he couldn’t join the shoot. But the crew managed it and completed the schedule, avoiding any wastage of the available dates. Story revolves around a mysterious barrister’s house in Beleghata. Film release on 26 September 2025.^[16]

Teaser released on 7 August 2025. Director said that he wanted to mould the character of Topshe in a new way, since he wanted to write a story having the touch of Feluda. Release in Durga Puja 2025. Not just a detective story, the film is a throwback to the Calcutta and its ancestral roots. ^[17]

Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed was casted from Bangladesh in the female lead of this film. Marked the third film this year with an opar bangla actor after Dear Ma and Putulnachee Itikotha which starred Jaya Ahsan as an opar bangla actor. Film release in September 2025.^[18]

Director made the first informal offer to Nawshaba via commenting her on her Facebook post, in which she had written a leeter to her dead father. She shared her experience, that she didn’t knew that it was Anik Dutta, the director from Kolkata and later her friends helped her and told that it’s the director himself and not anyone fake. She shared anecdotes from her shooting experience in Kolkata, her experience during Durga Puja preparations in the city and how she took time to cope up with Abir since she is a shy person. ^[19]

Tollywood debut. Director casted her without seeing any of her theatrical works. She was casted as director saw some some open letters she posted on Facebook dedicated to her dead father. Director casted her not for her past work experience, but for her view and writing prowess regarding her country and its people. Initially she not knew who was the actor opposite her, but later got to know it’s Abir.^[20] ^[21]

On Thursday (date dekhe likhte hobe) Nightclub song was released – displayee Calcutta colonial heritage and the then prominent jazz culture. Backdrop created with details. Song launched at a restaurant – Roja Paromita Dey embodies her on screen character of a singer in the 60s. Wearing similar dress, she presented a performance with the music composer. Event was attended by other cast members.^[22]

Film is shot in present day and goes occasionally back to 1960 for the backstory. Some scenes shot in Darjeeling, Kurseong hills in North Bengal but mostly in Kolkata. Due to his poor health, the director missed the principle shooting schedule in Darjeeling in November. He also missed a few schedule in Kolkata. But he was in touch with his team, advising them and solving any issues faced regarding the shoot. Filming was done across multiple locations in Kolkata – An old house in Beleghata, locally known as the Barrister bari, St John’s Church in Dalhousie. In Trincas, first scene shot. The Russell Exchange – Old auction house, an old antique shop, Calcutta and Tribe Café . Planned to shot in Bow Barracks, but owing to some issues, had to recreate the scene in a studio. In Kurseong, most shooting around a dilapidated church. An infirmary and charitable hospital was recreated at Mount Hermon School in Darjeeling. Scenes also filmed at the Darjeeling Mall and Glenary’s. An important sequence was shot in the tea gardens of Gidda Hills. The overall filming was completed in less than a month and wrapped up within October 2023. The post production and editing work started from early December 2023. Arghyakamal Mitra, Datta’s frequently collaborator as a editor, handled the editing.^[23] The post production work started from the early (first week – confirm korte hobe) of December. Teaser release. Film is set in present but often lingers in the old Calcutta nostalgia. Chemistry of budding friendship between the characters played by Abir and Nawshaba.^[25]

First poster – featured iconic elements of the Kolkata cityscape in the backdrop. On 14 September, it is in the middle of its shooting schedule in Kolkata.^[26]

Release film on 26 September 2025. Nawshaba used to write letters to her father’s memory towards the end of 2022 and start of 2023 on Facebook. I the respect, she had minor conversation with Anik Datta but didn’t knew he was a director. When she was first offered a film by him through informal on Facebook, she thought it was prank. Director sent her part of the script, asked her to record it and sent him. This went for three months and she was informed that she wa selected for the film, after three months. (Synopsis ache – chaile ekhan theke add kora jete pare) ^[27]

Abhijit Barman aka Pota is the singer of the Rooftop Song. In the film, the artist himself, Abhijit sings the song. He was present in the film in front of the camera and he sang the song (Kon situation e geyeche film e, gaan ta dekhe add korte hobe) Topshe is not Feluda’s assistant but independent lead detective himself. (The character is inspired and not the actual Topshe from Feluda series.)^[28]

On 30th August 2025, Abir completed his patch dubbing for the film,. Controersy thtt Abir not wants to release this film. But he says no to this allegations against him and placed counter logic.^[29]

The nightclub song release held at Trincas. The same actors who performed this song in the movie, danced at the song launch. The singer and composer sang the song while the actors danced. ^[38]

Director wanted a cast a new face in the female lead. As per his story since the character is from Dhaka, he required someone who has the regional dialect and slight variation from the usual Bengali. So he casted Nawshaba. But later on, due to the Bangladesh tensions in 2025, she couldn’t come to India and hence couldn’t complete the last part of her dubbing. The remaining dubbing was completed by Roja Paromira Dey. She was chosen since her maternal house is in Dhaka, so she could speak in the Bangladeahi dialect too. ^[39]

Special screening on 18 October 2025. Abir was present. Director suddenly fell sick – had difficulry in breathing. After taking rest and inhaler, started feeling better. The special screening started without him. ^[40]

Initially it was scheduled to release in the Durga Puja 2024. But the producer Firdausal Hasan took out Joto Kando Kolkatatei out from the PUJA list owing to Abir’s contract issues. Per reports, Abir has signed a contract with Windows Production that for three consecutive Durga Pujas, that is from 2023 to 2025, Abir won’t be able to release any other film of his during the pujas. As a result, the director put allegations that despite the shooting was completed, he didn’t come to complete his dubbing. As a result, they had to delay their film from 2024 Durga Puja and reschedule it on some later date.^[41]

Film released on Friday. (date dekhe confirm kore add korte hobe) Clashed with Raghju Dakat, Raktabeej 2 and Devi Chowfhurani. Producer Firdausal Hasan said in an an interview – heavy downpours and subsequent waterlogging hsas damppened the spirits. He has personally sufferened financisl losses at his production office first floor due to waterlogging. Still, he was hoping that the audience will turn up to the theatres.^[42]

Four movies released during Durga Puja 2025.^[43] A West Bengal Govt. gave a order that at least one Bengali film among the four released, will have to be screened by all the theatre owners during the prime time. (3pm – 9pm) This resulted in a scheduling log for the theatre owners in the multiple film release season. ^[44]

In August 2025, Anik Datta fell and suffered from grave injuries in his lower vertebral region. Doctors advised him to take 3 weeks of complete rest. Small amount of post production work is still left. Producer mentioned in an intreview, that he will wait for the final call from the director. He will not change the release date as of then. He would visit the director, speak with him and then take the final decisoin since he believes that the final call for releasing a film is always upto the director.^[45]

Absent during a part of shooting schedule for his illness. Causewd ove rexcessive pressure on executive producer saptarshi, sernior assistant director and dop. Abir was not sharing film teasers or trailer, so director called him. But he said that he can’t do promotion owing to contract with Windows Productoin.^[46]

Filmi8ng started in September 2023. Initially, the post production was scheduled to end by July 2024. There we was a a probability that the film will be released in Durga Puja 2024.^[47]

Film was planned to release in Durga Puja 2024. But upon Abir’s request, the producer delayed the date to the next year, that is in 2025. But in 2025, when the producer wanted to release it during the Pujas, Abir once again raised objection since he will not be able to be a part of promotions. So he asked the producer to delay the film to the next year. Due to his contract signed with Windows Productions. But producer was determined to release the film this year. He was having problems due to the invested money. Abir raised his objection that he will ot be able to be present at the premiere.^[48]

For the title song, they used a Mozart piece in the song theoughout and blend it with original elements due to copyright reasons. The darjeeling song was made in partially nepali and bengali to capture the essence of mist and rain. Diector siad in an interview “Typically, I use music sparingly, but this time we embraced it more, weaving it into the narrative to sustain tension throughout the film. But Bow Barracks, for instance, is so strikingly vivid, especially that bold red. I envisioned a shot of two characters entering and searching for Leslie’s room, but we ultimately chose to cut straight to the room and back out again. I wanted the final shot to capture that moment of revelation, coupled with the festive Christmas lights they put up during the season. But it wasn’t easy; every time we returned to shoot, the cost seemed to rise dramatically. The same happened with St. John’s Church.” (lead e add kora jete pare that the film was a box office success)^[49]

Agnivo Niyogi of The Telegraph reviewed he film and wrote “Joto Kando Kolkatatei is Dutta’s most explicit homage to Ray, presented under the guise of a detective mystery. The end product, however, is less of a gripping thriller and more of an indulgent nostalgia piece that often feels flat.” He mentioned although the film has a Feluda charm on papers, real tension is not visible in the execution. He criticized the easily predictable twists, the lack of genuine suspense and slow pace of the film. He praised Abir’s performance but mentioned it to be similar to his role in his other detective films. He additionally praised the cinematography, music and background score which according to him, “helped to rediscover Kolkata and its ancient charms.”^[51]

Eshna Bhattacharya of the Times of India rated the film 3.5/5 stars and noted “The film is witty but indulgent, affectionate but occasionally clumsy, clever in concept but uneven in execution. Its strengths lie in its atmosphere, performances, music, and its unwavering love for the city. Its weaknesses lie in pacing, predictability, and the occasional implausibility of its central mystery.” She praised Abir, Dulal Lahiri, Rik Chatterjee and Paromita Dey’s performance besides praising the crisp dialogues. She criticized the easy predictability of the twists, over excessive supporting characters, weak execution of the painting idea and slow pace of the film. But she praised the rejuvenating cinematography, the lively colour palettes and the nostalgic music of the film which she termed as “the soul of the film.”^[52]

Controversy. Director and producer did a press conference and said Abir chatterjee is not cooperating with them. They said that Abir was signed for Joto Kando Kolkatatei in 2022-2023 and it was scheduled for a 2024 Durga Puja release. Producer said “However, upon Abir’s request, Friends Communication postponed the release. This year, Chatterjee continues to cite contract issues and unavailability for promotional activities.” In his Defence, Abir told in an interview to TOI that “During pujas, I had ‘Karnasubarner Guptodhon’ in 2022, ‘Raktabeej’ in 2023, ‘Bohurupi’ in 2024. This year, I have a contract for the puja release of ‘Raktabeej 2′ that was filmed in March–April 2025. When discussions began this year about JKK’s release, I already informed Friends Communication about my contract with Windows for the Puja release.” The producer said that he expected more prodfessionalism from Abir as he said that he beieves an actor should take greater responsibikity for a film. He mentioned that a film transcends promotion and individual concersns. In reply, Abir said when his work ethics were questioned “Was JKK even ready for the release last puja? The film’s shooting ended in Nov 2023. The dubbing concluded in June this year. I even completed the correction dubbing on Aug 30.” He also added that prevously multiple times, in 2014, 15 and 18, his multiple films have released in thr Pujas and both of them have performed well.^[57]

There wre rumours that the film will be postponed since the director was at bed rest after he suffered injuries in a minor accident. Some post production work are still left. His assistants are sometimes bringing the work to Anik’s hosue (post-production work), showing him and then compoleting it. Many rumours were, The three remaining films with which this is clasing are action packed films and this is completely different from them. In reply to the rumours, the producer confirmed in an interview with anandabazar that there will be no change in the release date and the film will be released in 2025 Durga Puja after getting postponed last year.^[58]

The priemere took place on 25 September 2025 in the absence of the lead Abir Chterjje.^[59] (Naa lagle, maaney ei information jodi onno kono news cover kore, tahole ei puro reference ta remove kore debo).

Anandabzar contaced friends communication at the time of motion poster release. The producre informed that last year they delayed their film since postp production work was remaining. But they are hoping to get a positive outcom if they sit in a meeting with Windows, regarding the a single actor’s two films release in the same time. Abir chatterjee. Also said, there shouldn’t be any issue if two films of a n acto is release in a festive season. People can and will watch both of s=his films. Director, when contacted, said that release time awsas producers’ choice.^[60]

Trailer release event, Abir was absent. Since he is under a special contact with windows, won’t be able to participate for the promotions of this film. Director and producer expresssed their discontent over non-cooperation from Abir. But informed that they will not take any step against him regarding this. Director said that he asked Abir if coming to trailer launch is also a part of “promotional activities” but he alleged that Abir didn’t reply him.
