Les Maîtres Cuisiniers de Belgique (Mastercooks of Belgium) is a professional culinary association in Belgium, founded by Pierre Romeyer.[1][2] The organization brings together chefs recognized for their achievements in Belgian gastronomy,[1][3] including many who have earned Michelin stars or been listed in major restaurant guides.[4] It is the largest professional chef association in Belgium and is currently led by Philippe Vanheule.[2][4]

The association was founded in 1980 by Pierre Romeyer, together with Pierre Wynants and Jacques Deluc, after Romeyer was not accepted into the French association of master chefs.[2] They were later joined by Claude Dupont, Robert Van Duüren, and Pierrot Fonteyne, establishing what became Les Maîtres Cuisiniers de Belgique.[2]

In 2002, Pierre Romeyer was granted the title of Baron by the Belgian monarchy in recognition of his contributions to Belgian gastronomy.[5][6]Since its founding, the association has aimed to promote Belgian culinary heritage and recognize the skills and achievements of professional chefs.[7] Its presidency has included Pierrot Fonteyne, Alain Deluc, Guy Van Cauteren, Robert Van Duüren, Frank Fol, and Cédric Poncelet.[7] Philippe Vanheule has served as chairman since 2024.[2]

Les Maîtres Cuisiniers de Belgique is composed of professional chefs who are recognized for their expertise and accomplishments within Belgian gastronomy.[8] Members include individuals who have received Michelin stars or have been featured in prominent restaurant guides.[4]

The association classifies its members into six categories: Restaurant, Brasserie/Bistro, Catering (including home cooking), Specialist, Honorary, and Candidate Master Cook.[9] Membership provides chefs with professional recognition and opportunities to collaborate on culinary initiatives and events.[7]

The association collaborates with Carrefour Belgium, during which chefs evaluate selected products based on taste, texture, consistency, and appearance.[3]

It organizes L’Étoile de la Cuisine Belge, a biennial competition to support emerging Belgian chefs.[10][11]

In 2021, the association launched La Quinzaine des Jeunes, offering reduced-price menus to diners under 25 to promote Belgian gastronomy among younger audiences.[12]

In 2025, the Master Chefs organized the first “Best Artisan Chef” of the country in Brussels.[13]

The Young Masters program supports early-career chefs by providing development opportunities and visibility within the Belgian culinary sector.[14]
