Football tournament

The Mexborough Montagu Hospital Cup is an annual football competition based in South Yorkshire with the final played at Hampden Road, Mexborough every Easter Monday.

Teams from across Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield compete in the competition where all monies raised is donated to the comforts fund at the local Montagu Hospital.

The competition is believed to be the oldest football competition where the final is still played at it’s original venue.

The inaugural competition was held in the 1896-97 season where Ecclesfield triumphed with a 2-0 win over Newhill at Hampden Road, Mexborough.

The competition’s final has been traditionally held on Easter Monday every year.[2]

128 years later, Westville of the Mexborough & District Sunday League beat AFP Pewter Pot 2-1 in the 2025 final at the same venue.
