Iranian actress

Niousha Akhshi (Persian: نیوشا آخشی) is an Iranian actress. She is best known for her role in the Academy Award-nominated and 2024 Cannes Film Festival winner drama film The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024), directed by Mohammad Rasoulof.

Shortly after finishing filming, Rasoulof, as well as the three actresses Niousha Akhshi, Mahsa Rostami and Setareh Maleki, had to flee Iran.

Niousha Akhshi was born in Tehran, Iran.

She gained international recognition in 2024 for her performance in Mohammad Rasoulof’s film The Seed of the Sacred Fig, which depicts a family’s fear and internal conflict amid protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. The film won the Jury Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Germany’s submission and nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

The film was secretly shot in Iran, with the director communicating with the actors in highly restricted conditions to avoid government surveillance. Akhshi’s performance was widely praised by international critics.

Following the end of filming, Niousha Akhshi, along with Rasoulof and fellow actresses Setareh Maleki and Mahsa Rostami, left Iran due to fear of government reprisals. She has since lived in Berlin, Germany, where she has taken part in artistic residencies and initiatives that support Iranian artists in exile, remaining active both as a performer and an advocate for freedom of expression in Iranian cinema.

She played as well in Destination: Origin, a 2025 theater play by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. The work explores themes of exile, identity, and displacement, examining how individuals reconstruct their sense of origin after leaving politically controlled homelands. It premiered at the Performing Exiles Festival in Berlin and through Europe.

The play employs visual metaphors and movement to depict a space between memory and reality. It stars Niousha Akhshi, Setareh Maleki, and Mahsa Rostami, marking their first major stage collaboration with Rasoulof since The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024).

Niousha Akhshi has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the German Film Awards (Deutscher Filmpreis) in 2025 for her performance in The Seed of the Sacred Fig. Niousha Akhshi Nomination Deutscher Filmpreis 2025
