The Dino Family (Russian: Доктор Динозавров, translit. Doktor Dinozavrov) is a Russian full-length adventure animated feature produced by Popok Animation and Yarko LLC, and distributed by Central Partnership (film company). The film was directed by Maksim Volkov and Maya Turkina, with the screenplay written by Maksim Volkov and Anton Grechko. It tells the story of teenager Phil Dino, who accidentally opens a portal to the Mesozoic Era and must survive in a prehistoric jungle while confronting a giant serpent named Titanoboa. The film premiered in Russia on August 28, 2025.[5][6]

Plot

Philip “Phil” Dinosaurov is a socially awkward high school student. His classmates tease him for his unusual surname, and his crush, Rina, seems oblivious to his feelings. At home, things are no better: his father, known as “the Doctor,” is obsessed with restoring their once-renowned paleontology museum, now on the brink of closure. The two clash over their visions for the future — the Doctor wants Phil to inherit and continue his paleontological legacy, while Phil dreams of forging his own path, far from dinosaurs and dusty exhibits.[7]

The paleontology museum

With unpaid bills piling up, the museum faces imminent shutdown. One day, the Doctor receives what appears to be a generous offer from a mysterious benefactor. To his surprise, the visitor turns out to be Rina’s father, Max Vinilion, whom Rina persuaded to help. However, Max has his own plans: he wants to turn the museum into a commercial entertainment center. The Doctor strongly opposes the idea, and tensions rise. Phil sides with Max, expressing his frustration with the museum and his fear of being trapped in it for life.

Phil with his father

In the heat of the argument, Phil impulsively activates a strange ancient device in the museum’s lab. The machine opens a portal that pulls in Phil, the Doctor, Rina, Max, and a mysterious energy stone that powers the portal — transporting them to the Mesozoic Era. During the chaotic journey, the children are separated from their fathers and land in different parts of a prehistoric jungle teeming with dinosaurs.

As they struggle to reunite, the characters begin to grow closer. Phil initially tries to impress Rina with exaggerated bravado, but his behavior only pushes her away. Over time, he realizes that sincerity matters more than performance. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Max, forced to cooperate, begin to understand each other and discover common ground.

Rina, Vegan and Phil get trapped by dinosaurs.

Eventually, the group reunites and encounters Phil’s grandfather, who was accidentally transported to the Mesozoic Era decades earlier, when the Doctor was still a child. Alongside him is Titanoboa — a giant, intelligent snake and the Doctor’s childhood friend. Titanoboa, believing he was betrayed, has spent years plotting revenge against the Dinosaurov family and humanity. In his underground lair, he commands an army of compies, digs tunnels, and delivers theatrical speeches filled with ominous vocabulary.

Before being pulled into the past, Titanoboa saw the museum’s skeletons and assumed humans were responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs. Fueled by this belief, he plans to use the portal to destroy humanity. But just as he prepares to act, the heroes explain the truth: dinosaurs were wiped out by a meteor, and the Doctor had tried to save him, not abandon him. Realizing his mistake, Titanoboa abandons his plan and reconciles with the family.

The group returns to the present. Max helps restore the museum, blending his vision with the Doctor’s: the museum remains a place of science, but now features engaging attractions that draw crowds. Using the portal’s energy stone, they create a unique exhibit that allows visitors to glimpse living dinosaurs — a bridge between eras and a symbol of unity.
