Thích Trung Hiếu (born 1996) is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, currently serving as the abbot of Phổ Lại Pagoda in Phong Thái Ward,^[a] Huế City. He is known for playing a central role in the establishment and development of Phổ Lại Pagoda since 2016.^[1] Alongside religious activities, he organizes community cultural activities^[2] and social work initiatives.^[3] He is also a poet and composer of Buddhist songs, and practices calligraphy and Buddhist statue carving.^[4][5][6]

Born Nguyễn Hồng Tùng on August 7, 1996, in Phan Rí Cửa (Bình Thuận province), he is the youngest of five children in a family with a long-standing Buddhist tradition.
In 2009, he was ordained as a novice monk at Long Quang Pagoda (Phan Rí Cửa), receiving the Dharma name “Quảng Chính” under the guidance of Most Venerable Thích Phước Huệ. He subsequently continued his monastic training at Thạnh Phước Pagoda (Bến Tre province) and was conferred the Dharma title “Thích Trung Hiếu” by Most Venerable Thích Minh Hiền.
In 2015, he received full ordination as a Bhikkhu (monk) at Bảo Tịnh Pagoda (Hậu Giang province) and completed an Intermediate Level Buddhist Studies program in Trà Vinh province. In 2016, he moved to Huế and commenced his religious activities at Phổ Lại Pagoda.^[5][6]

Phổ Lại Pagoda originated from the Pho Lai Buddhist Recitation Hall (Niệm Phật đường Phổ Lại), established in 2016.^[b] In the same year, the Pagoda’s Board of Stewards invited him to assume the role of Abbot and oversee the construction of the pagoda. Beginning in 2016, he initiated the construction of Phổ Lại Pagoda, gradually developing its architectural structures, landscape, and religious facilities.
On May 2, 2024, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Thừa Thiên Huế Province officially appointed him as abbot (Decision No. 106/QĐ-BTS).
By 2026, the pagoda’s grounds had expanded to approximately 2,800 m², with its structures designed to integrate traditional architecture with Zen-inspired elements and spaces for Buddhist activities.^[1][5][7]

At Phổ Lại Pagoda, he organizes Buddhist activities such as mindfulness retreats, Buddha’s Birthday and Vu Lan ceremonies, formal monastic meal rituals, doctrinal classes, and programs for youth.^[7]

Annually, around the middle of the sixth lunar month, he hosts the Grand Avalokiteshvara Ceremony. This event encompasses religious and cultural activities, including art performances, exhibitions of paintings, calligraphy, handicrafts, a vegetarian buffet, a lantern ceremony, offering rituals, Dharma talks, and charitable programs connected with the local community.^[6][2]

Key programs he has implemented at Phổ Lại Pagoda include: awarding scholarships, distributing gifts to underprivileged households, organizing activities for children, and providing disaster relief to residents in the Central region during natural calamities. During severe floods in Huế, Phổ Lại Pagoda opened its premises to provide temporary shelter and act as a relief distribution center for affected locals. These activities were initiated from the pagoda’s formative years and remain closely linked to the daily lives of the local community.^[8][9]
In addition, he has undertaken projects such as installing solar-powered lighting systems in the area, organizing traditional medicine health check-ups and treatments, and supporting home repairs for disadvantaged families.
On June 12, 2025, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Huế City officially recognized his contributions to local Buddhist affairs (Decision No. 153/QĐ-BTS).^[3][6][7]

Thích Trung Hiếu is the author of the album “Thiền Ca Chùa Phổ Lại” (Zen Songs of Phổ Lại Pagoda), certified by the Copyright Office of Vietnam (Certificate No. 6489/2021/QTG, dated September 16, 2021). Several of his songs have been released on digital music platforms, including Vu Lan Nhớ Mẹ Hiền (Vu Lan, Remembering a Kind Mother), Đời Tăng Lữ (A Monk’s Life), Ca Ngợi Phật (Praising the Buddha),^[10] Em Lên Chùa Đón Xuân (Going to the Pagoda to Welcome Spring),^[11][12] Khúc Tiêu Dao (Melody of Leisure),^[13] and Đón Gió Xuân Thiền (Welcoming the Spring Breeze of Zen).^[14][4]

In addition to music, he writes poetry, with his works being selected for publication in several domestic literary collections, including anthologies released by the Writers’ Association Publishing House^[15] and The Gioi Publishers,^[16] as well as in the Sông Hương (Perfume River) Magazine.^[17]
Furthermore, he practices calligraphy, painting, and Buddhist statue carving at Phổ Lại Pagoda. Some of his works include The Old Woman in Rags Prays at the Pagoda with a Sincere Heart (Cụ bà áo rách đi chùa lòng thành), The Austerity Practice and the Sympathy of the Abbot (Hạnh đầu đà và cảm thông trụ trì), and Letter from COVID-19 to Humanity (Thư Covid-19 gửi nhân loại).^[4][1][5]
