Troy Ribeiro is an Indian playwright, filmmaker, novelist, film critic, educator, and media consultant with over 35 years of experience in mass communication. His work spans theatre, film, literature, journalism, and academia across India, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
Early life and education
[edit]
Troy was born in Goa and brought up in Mumbai, where he completed his entire education. He graduated with a degree in Bachelors of Commerce from the University of Mumbai and is an alumnus of both the Xavier Institute of Communications and the Xavier Institute of Management Archived 2020-09-30 at the Wayback Machine, where he specialised in Journalism and Human Resources.
He began his career in the hospitality industry before transitioning to the field of media and mass communication. This shift shaped his cross-disciplinary approach to storytelling, which combines theatre, film, journalism, and education.
Ribeiro began his professional career in journalism in the late 1980s. He worked as Chief Reporter for Movie Magazine (India Book House) from 1988 to 1991, where he reported on the Indian film industry, conducted celebrity interviews, and wrote features and investigative pieces. From 1991 to 1994, he was Senior Correspondent at Stardust (Magna Publishing Co. Ltd), covering the entertainment sector and contributing columns, reports, and features. During this period, he also reported on Indian cinema for BBC Radio Leicester.
Ribeiro’s journalism from the early 1990s has been cited in later accounts of Bollywood controversies[1], including an article in India Today, a retrospective published by Tanqeed, and continued references to his report on the death of actress Divya Bharati.[2][3][4][5]
Television Production
[edit]
In 1995, Ribeiro joined IN Mumbai (Hinduja Group) as Manager, Production and later as Executive Producer. He independently managed production activities, conceptualised and produced in-house programmes, liaised with external producers, and handled budgeting and scheduling. He was instrumental in shaping the programming of the channel during its formative years.
Media, PR, and Publishing
[edit]
Ribeiro expanded into media consultancy and publishing roles in the late 1990s and 2000s. From 1997 to 1998, he served as Director of Communications at Orpro Company Limited in the UAE, where he oversaw marketing communication strategies, branding, media planning, and participation in international trade exhibitions. In 1999, he co-founded Litmus Public Relations in Mumbai, where he served as Managing Director until 2012, providing strategic communication, client servicing, and media relations.[6] He also co-founded Litmus Publishing Co. Ltd. in London (2006–2008), managing publishing and communication projects for international clients such as the Commonwealth Business Council. Between 2005 and 2006, he worked in London as Commercial Director of Asian Rich List Ltd., responsible for editorial planning, design, printing, and revenue generation.
Since 2011, Ribeiro has reviewed films for the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), and his work has appeared in major outlets including Free Press Journal, NDTV, and MSN India.[7][8][9]
Ribeiro was also a member of the Film Critics Guild, India’s first registered guild for film critics, and remained a member until 2021. Through the guild, he participated in initiatives such as the Critics’ Choice Short Film Awards, which highlighted independent filmmaking talent in India.[10][11]
Ribeiro has written and directed several original plays.
His plays have been recognised for their social themes, emotional resonance, and successful runs at major Mumbai venues including the NCPA and the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.[17]
Ribeiro is the author of the crime novel Samina (2020), adapted from a screenplay he originally wrote in 2008. His short story The Witness was shortlisted for the Fundação Oriente Short Story Competition in 2021 and later adapted into a bilingual short film. His story Two Orphans won second prize at the 2023 Fundação Oriente competition, 2023. He has also authored several academic reference books for Mumbai University students, including Introduction to Journalism, Creative Writing, Reporting, and Editing, published by Vipul Prakashan.
In 2023, Ribeiro wrote and directed the bilingual short film The Witness (English and Konkani), featuring acclaimed actors Rajendra Gupta and Sushmita Mukherjee. The film was among seven Goan films showcased in the special Goan section of the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).[18]
The short was based on his previously published short story.

Ribeiro has over two decades of teaching experience as a visiting faculty member across multiple colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai.
