The Van Thuyne Ridge Research Center is a research facility in the bush in the Chobe District in Botswana[1] that specializes in geology, biology and antropology[1]. It was founded by John Van Thuyne and Rita Ridge in 2014[2].
It provides housing and a laboratory for researchers who are carrying out fieldwork.

The facility is located in the Chobe district in Botswana, about eight kilometers south from Parakarungu, the closest village. It sits in the savanna and is beeing surrounded mainly by Hyperrinia thatching grass and sickle bush[3].

Energy and Water supply

[edit]

The research center is not connected to the power grid and the water grid. Electricity is provided by a solar power plant during daylight and batteries for the night. In case of issues with the photovoltaic system the camp is powered by the back-up generator[4].

A bore hole on the site provides the camp with water[4].

As of October 2025, the research center is partnering with the following universities:

Switzerland:

  • University of Lausanne
  • University of Zurich

Botswana:

  • Botswana International University of science and technology

South Africa

  • University of Witwatersrand
