Walter Hickey is an American data journalist and author. He serves as Editor for data and analysis at Business Insider. He is a Pulitzer Prize recipient for 2022.

Early life and education

Hickey graduated from the College of William & Mary in Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics. While at William & Mary he also wrote for the campus newspaper The Flat Hat, blending his quantitative background with journalism experience. He later remarked that this combination of being a math major and a student reporter gave him an approach to topics that served him well in his data journalism career.

Career

Business Insider (2008–2013, 2018–present)

Hickey began his career at Business Insider, serving as an intern and then a staff reporter. He rejoined Insider in 2018 and eventually became Deputy Editor for Data and Analysis, overseeing data driven reporting and graphic features.

FiveThirtyEight (2013–2017)

He worked as the chief culture writer at FiveThirtyEight, writing analysis on politics, entertainment, and society.

Sherwood News (2023–present)

In 2023 Hickey was named Executive Editor of Sherwood News, the media outlet affiliated with the financial services firm Robinhood Markets.

He has also contributed to outlets such as Marvel.com and assisted ABC News with data coverage of elections .  He also authors Numlock News, a daily Substack newsletter highlighting surprising stories behind statistics
