The Indian government’s decision in 2024 to terminate the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between Northeast India and Myanmar was met with opposition from the Wesean Student Federation (WSF). The group claimed that the action would damage long-standing cultural ties, upend livelihoods, and split border families. The WSF demanded the immediate restoration of the FMR and increased openness in policies impacting border communities, while also criticising biometric mapping and border fencing. |

The Wesean Student Federation (WSF) is a student organisation based in the WeSEA region (short for Western South-East Asia), comprising of Northeastern India, Chin, Sagaing and Arakan districts in Myanmar and Chittagong hills in Bangladesh.[1][2]
Foundation
On March 17, 2024, the Wesean Student Federation (WSF) was officially formed to unite Wesean students across the Wesea region. The federation was established because the founders were concerned that the voices of Weseans were being neglected by other student bodies throughout Northeast India. The founding members declared that they intend to build cross-border solidarity amongst Weseans in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, while also maintaining their indigenous identity and rights.[3][4][5]
Missions and Objectives
The mission of the WSF is to foster unity, integrity, and purpose amongst Wesean students. Its key objectives are:[4][5]
- Unity Across Borders – Foster solidarity between Weseans who are separated by the borders of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
- Integrity and Purpose – Promote transparency and justice within the organizational work.
- Promotion of Indigenous Identity and Rights – Protect Wesean culture and advocate for the rights of indigenous people.
- Going Beyond Ethnonationalism – Promote diversity and reject divisive dialogue.
- Commitment to Wesean Unity – Enhance mutual understanding, collaboration, and unity among Wesean students.
