Comment: Yuan Yuan is a living person. Every assertion about a living person must be referenced. The list of exhibitions is largely unreferenced. That matter aside:1. A list of exhibitions may be (and usually is) in chronological order, but if so then the order should be from oldest to newest.2. Please read and implement Bare URLs and Using a source more than once. — Hoary (talk) 22:16, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
A Chinese artist-therapist
Yuan Yuan (artist)
Yuan Yuan (Chinese: 袁媛; born 22 March 1983) is a Chinese artist-therapist, translator, and entrepreneur currently based in Milan.[1][2]
Career
Early years
Yuan first became publicly active in the context of Sino-Italian cultural exchange. She was reported as part of educational and cultural programmes facilitating mobility and intercultural engagement between China and Italy.[3]
In 2013, Yuan contributed to Sino-Italian cultural exchange through her role as vice-general director of Finestra Italiana, coordinating educational and cultural programmes that supported Chinese students preparing to study in Italy. She assisted in the organisation of language training and intercultural activities designed to facilitate academic integration and mobility between the two countries.[4]
That same year, Yuan was featured in a report on the increasing presence of Chinese students at the Brera Academy of Fine Art in Milan. The article described her as part of a broader wave of Chinese students choosing Italy for fine arts education, reflecting her early involvement in cross-cultural educational exchange.[5]
Art therapy and community work
Since 2020, Yuan has maintained an ongoing collaboration with Le Sciûre, a Milan-based collective of elderly women engaged in textile and community arts. Together, they have organised a series of participatory art-therapy workshops designed to support senior women through collaborative creative practices. Works produced in these workshops have been included in exhibitions supported by the Cariplo Foundation, including presentations within the Cariplo Factory initiative “Human Innovation Art”, which highlights community-based and socially oriented artistic projects.[6]
In 2021, Yuan participated in a public art-therapy forum organised by the Social Aesthetics Research Institute of Tsinghua University, where she discussed her work as an art therapist.[7]
In August 2022, Yuan curated the interactive art-therapy workshop “Le Quattro Stagioni” at the Rocca Malatestiana fortress in Fano. Working with the institution’s artistic director and the local municipality, she led a residency involving participants – including children and individuals with disabilities – who created season-themed artworks using discarded clothing and textile materials donated by local residents. The creative process remained open to the public, and the resulting works were exhibited from 3 September 2022.[8]
In the same year, Yuan served as an art therapist in the workshop “This Is Not a Mask – Love Relay Embroidery”, organised by Being Art Museum in Shanghai.[9]
In 2023, Yuan acted as an art therapist and facilitator for “Arte Terapeutica per un Mandala”, a participatory art-therapy workshop held at the Convento di Santa Chiara in Mola di Bari and organised in collaboration with the Brera Academy of Fine Art. The workshop invited participants to create a collective mandala exploring art’s role in shared healing and community expression.[10]
Il Filo Rosso
In 2025, Italian filmmaker Elisa Cherchi directed the short documentary “Il Filo Rosso”, which focuses on Yuan’s artistic methodology and interprets her practice through the symbolic framework of the red thread.[11] The film was selected for the Tulipani di Seta Nera festival.[12]Through this cinematic portrayal, Yuan’s work is positioned within broader Sino-Italian artistic exchanges and community-based therapeutic practices.[13]
2025 Milan Fashion Week
In 2025, Yuan participated in a collaborative workshop presented alongside designer Zhao Huizhou’s Fall/Winter 2025 runway show during Milan Fashion Week. The workshop integrated traditional Miao embroidery with art-therapy practices and gained attention for its cross-cultural and community-oriented approach. Working with Miao embroidery inheritors Long Luying and Long Ting, as well as the Milan-based collective Le Sciûre, she contributed to weaving red threads onto fragments of ancient Chinese ceramics, creating a symbolic and participatory artistic intervention.[14][15]
