Eight Senior PTI Leaders Sentenced to 10 Years Over May 9 Riots in Pakistan

Background of the May 9 Protests

The unrest erupted on May 9, 2023, shortly after Imran Khan was taken into custody. Nationwide demonstrations led to attacks on key military and government installations, including the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the residence of a top military commander in Lahore. The government alleges that PTI leaders actively incited the violence, which they say posed a threat to national security.

While the trial against Khan is still ongoing and the prosecution continues to present witnesses, the latest convictions do not directly impact his individual case.

Details of the Sentencing and Legal Response

According to defense lawyer Burhan Moazzam, the case was tried inside a jail facility in Lahore for security reasons. He expressed concern over the outcome, pointing out inconsistencies in the verdict.

“It is surprising that six individuals were acquitted while eight others were convicted under the exact same charges,” said Moazzam, who confirmed plans to file an appeal.

The convictions are tied to a specific incident near a prominent intersection in Lahore during the May 9 unrest. Other related cases from that day are being tried separately.

Who Was Sentenced?

Among those sentenced are prominent PTI figures who previously held key positions in Punjab’s provincial administration:

  • Dr. Yasmin Rashid – Former Punjab Health Minister
  • Ejaz Chaudhry – Sitting PTI Senator
  • Mehmoodur Rashid – Ex-Minister for Housing
  • Umar Sarfraz Cheema – Former Punjab Governor and close aide to Imran Khan

Meanwhile, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi was acquitted in this specific case. However, he remains in custody due to other pending legal matters, and it remains uncertain whether this acquittal will affect his overall detention status.

Government’s Reaction

Commenting on the court’s decision, Aqeel Malik, Pakistan’s junior law minister, stated that the ruling was delivered “in accordance with the law and the constitution.”

Imran Khan’s Ongoing Legal Troubles

Imran Khan, who was ousted from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022, continues to face multiple criminal charges. These include:

  • Corruption
  • Contempt of court
  • Violation of the Official Secrets Act

The former Prime Minister has rejected all allegations, insisting that the cases are politically motivated efforts to sideline him and dismantle his party. The military, for its part, denies any involvement in the legal actions against PTI.
