Her work focuses on the humanitarian-development-peace nexus in multiple African countries, with specializations including gender equality, child protection, and public health.[1] She is the Deputy Representative for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ghana.[2][3]
Kamwendo-Naphambo has a master’s degree in development studies from Lund University with a thesis on children in Malawian prisons in 2009.[4]
Kamwendo-Naphambo received her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2020.[5] Her doctoral research was supported by the prestigious African Pathways Scholarship, jointly administered by the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).[6]
Kamwendo-Naphambo co-authored the research report “Poor, Invisible and Excluded: Women in State Custody Malawi (2009)”. Published by WLSA Malawi, the report details the difficult circumstances of women in state custody in Malawi.[7]
Kamwendo-Naphambo has also researched work the links between this traditional authority and power and girls’ sexuality in Malawi, where chiefs use girls’ sexuality to control important aspects of their communities and the economic benefits of these initiatives.[8]
Her final research focuses on the inter-related factors driving child marriage, highlighting the legal status of child marriage in Africa, the need for harmonization of national laws with the ACRWC, and various legislative approaches to address child marriage.[9]
Kamwendo-Naphambo also contributed to Malawi’s child marriage policy brief and assessments in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.[10]
Kamwendo-Naphambo started her career at Plan International where she rolled out gender equality and social norm change initiatives through youth engagement and peer-to-peer mobilisation.[11] In 2013, she worked on to launch Plan 18+ towards ending child marriages in Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.[12] This was aimed at amending the policy to reduce the legal marriage age from 15 to 18.[13] She also worked briefly with United Nations Women Country office in Malawi, before joining the United Nation Mission In South Sudan and led child protection initiatives with military forces in the height of South Sudanese Civil War in 2019.[14]
She currently heads the United Nation’s Population Fund Agency [15][16][17][18]
