Festival/Ritual celebrated in Karnataka, India

Gorehabba (Kannada: ಗೋರೆಹಬ್ಬ; Hindi: गोरेहब्बा) is a Hindu festival[1] in India about splashing cow dung[2] on each other. This festival is celebrated a day after Diwali‘s Bali Padyami in the small village of Gumatapura, in Karnataka, India.[3][4] It is also celebrated by Kannada people in the similarly named Gumtapuram village in Thalavadi taluk of Erode district in Tamil Nadu.[5][6]

According to Hindu legends, the god Beereshwara Swamy was born from cow dung; therefore, the festival is celebrated by splashing cow dung on one another.[7]

Similar to Gorehabba, people in the village of Kairuppala near Aspari in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh celebrate Pidakala War.[8]

In 2025, American YouTuber Tyler Oliveira made social media posts of him participating in the festival.[9][7]
