2025 attack in Michigan, U.S.

On the morning of September 28, 2025, a mass shooting[2] occurred at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) meetinghouse in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, United States. According to police, a shooter reportedly rammed his vehicle into the church, then opened fire on a crowd of worshippers inside.[3] A large fire then broke out in the church building following the shooting, believed to have been set by the shooter.[4] A total of 10 people were reportedly struck by the gunfire, with two deceased, one injured in critical condition, and the remaining injured in stable condition. The shooter was killed on the scene.[5]

This was the second major shooting at an LDS church since the July 22, 2018 shooting at an LDS church in Fallon, Nevada, where two people were shot, one fatally.[6][7]

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (informally known as the Mormon Church) located in Grand Blanc Township, a township with a population of over 39,000 people. It was located near a law firm, parking lot and a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.[8] The shooting happened one day after the church’s president, Russell M. Nelson, died at the age of 101.[9] On the day of the shooting, the church was holding a memorial service for Nelson, during which the shooter opened fire.[10]

Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the shooting, saying her “heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community”. Grand Blanc Police Department urged the residents to avoid the crime scene, it set up a reunification site nearby.[21]

Attorney General Pam Bondi said she is praying for the victims of the incident, describing it as “heartbreaking and chilling”.[15] FBI director Kash Patel said he and FBI are praying for the victims, he described the shooting as a “cowardly and criminal act”.[22] President Donald Trump described the shooting as “horrendous”.[23] Church spokesman Doug Andersen released a statement, saying in part, “We pray for peace and healing for all involved”.[24]
