Jeff Grob (born December 6, 1950[1]) also known as Joe X. Dube, is an American drummer. He was the drummer for Looking Glass, best known for their US number one “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)“, and Starz.
Grob was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He first heard rock and roll music on the radio while in the car, and began playing the drums.[2]
Grob started playing the drums in bands as a teenager, playing three nights a week.[3] He then met Pieter Sweval through his psychology teacher.[3][4] In 1969, they joined Looking Glass with Elliot Lurie and Larry Gronsky.[5] In August 1972, their first single, “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)“, went to number one in the US for one week.[5]
In 1975, after Lurie and Gronsky left, Jeff and Pieter formed Starz, an early heavy metal group who were managed by the same man who also managed KISS around the same time.[3] Grob began using the name “Joe X. Dube” while in Starz.[3] He disbanded Starz in 1979 and moved back to New Jersey from Hollywood and took a job as a construction worker and in 1982 went to Union County College to get a degree in landscape architecture.[3][4] After graduating summa cum laude in 1985,[4] he was hired at a landscape company that he has worked at now for over 35 years.[6][3]
Grob returned to music in the late 1990s, performing music for children at churches and in 2003 reformed Starz. He still lives in New Brunswick.[4]
