Joseph Itaya is an American film director, digital creator, entrepreneur, and educator.[1][2] He is the Program Director and Professor at USC’s Annenberg School.[3] He directed Lost & Found (2016)[4] and has developed digital campaigns for Sony, NBCUniversal, and Coca-Cola.[5] He is also the founder of Legacy Films and VR company EVRLAND.[6] Since 2022, he has served as Program Director and Associate Professor at the University of Southern California‘s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism.
Life and career
Itaya was born and raised on South Whidbey Island, Washington.[1]He moved to the island with his family at age 10.[7] He graduated from South Whidbey High School in 1996.[8]
Itaya earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Washington in 1999.[3] He later completed a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Cinematography and Film/Video Production from the University of Southern California.[9]
Itaya began his professional career as a producer and director in the film industry, working on commercials, music videos, and narrative films.[9] In 2007, he founded Legacy Films, a production company focused on documentary-style filmmaking.[10]
Through Legacy Films, Itaya has produced over 100 memoir films, working with politicians such as Walter Mondale and athletes such as Sugar Ray Leonard.[11] The company also has a charitable division that has helped raise millions of dollars for causes such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the ICL Foundation, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).[12] Itaya’s directorial debut came with the family adventure film Lost & Found, which he also wrote and produced.[13] The film, inspired by his childhood experiences on Whidbey Island, was shot in Northern Ontario, Canada, despite Itaya’s original plan to film on Whidbey Island.[1] The moviefeatures a cast including Jason Patric, Cary Elwes, and young actors Justin Kelly and Benjamin Stockham. It tells the story of two brothers who uncover a secret about their grandfather, leading to a treasure hunt on a mysterious island.[14]
In 2017, Itaya founded EVRLAND, a company focused on creating virtual reality.[5]
In 2022, Itaya became the Program Director and Professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, where he teaches digital media management.[15]Itaya is the co-host and co-producer of the MEDIASCAPE Podcast.[11]
He was the film composer for the sailing documentary: Alone Against the Sea. Itaya founded Muse Academy in 2000, an institution dedicated to teaching young professionals about music, film, virtual reality, screenwriting, and entrepreneurship.[16]
