American game designer and marketer
Matthew “Leth” Griffin is an American video game designer, marketer, and teacher. He is best known for co-founding the indie studio Team Wanderlust/Yeti Trunk, his work on the 2013 title Risk of Rain, and for serving as the marketing and publishing director for indie games such as Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight series.
Personal life and education
Griffin has a Bachelor’s Degree in philosophy, a Minor in mathematics, and an Associate’s Degree in programming.[1]
He currently lives in Texas, United States.[2]
Career
Teaching
As of February 2012, Griffin was a full-time teacher and tutor.[1]
Game design
Griffin created games using Game Maker in the 2000s, but struggled to find artists. Griffin formed Team Wanderlust alongside pixel artist Jason Gordy, a fan of his.[3][1] The team was later renamed to Yeti Trunk.[3] In 2004, they began working on Wanderlust: The Online Adventure, which was cancelled two years later.[3][1] The team moved on to work on a new game titled, Wanderlust: Rebirth, a game set to “closer resemble their vision”; Wanderlust: Rebirth released on June 14, 2011.[3][1] Griffin and Gordy released three more games over the next few years: Gubs (2012),[3] Puck Bang (2013),[3] and Wanderlust Adventures (2015).[4] The company Chucklefish published Yeti Trunk’s Wanderlust Adventures,[4] and Griffin later helped work on games they partnered with, such as Risk of Rain (2013)[5] and Witchmarsh (TBA).[4] For Risk of Rain, Griffin worked on improving the game’s multiplayer code.[5]
Marketing and publishing
In June 2015, Chucklefish brought on Griffin as a publishing manager.[4] At Chucklefish, Griffin published, marketed, and handled PR for games such as Interstellia (2015) and Stardew Valley (2016).[6] In 2016, Australian indie developer Team Cherry brought on Griffin to manage marketing and PR for their then-upcoming title, Hollow Knight.[6] Griffin continued his partnership with Team Cherry for their next game, Hollow Knight: Silksong.[7] For Hollow Knight: Silksong, Griffin posted riddles on Discord in June and July of 2020 that revealed new characters,[8][9] helped playtest the game,[10] and gave updates on the game’s development over the years,[7][11][12] as Team Cherry themselves stayed mostly silent while working on the game.[13][14] In 2021, Canadian indie developer Mongoose Rodeo hired Griffin to market their upcoming Kickstarter-backed game Crowsworn.[15]
