Indian medicinal tree

Mudaima is a medicinal plant or medium sized tree. It is commonly identified as Buchanania Axillaris,[1] of family Anacardiaceae. It is an endemic species and only its kernel, seeds and grains are edible. In states like Andhra Pradesh and Odisha it is used more for its medicinal properties and as timber.[2][3] It is grown in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andaman Islands in India, apart from Sri Lanka and Mayanmar.[4]

A closely related species in the same genus is Buchanania lanzan, a deciduous tree with tomentose (hairy) branches.[5][6] Its local name in Hindi is Chironji.[5] Its seeds have almond-like flavour.[7]

It is not be confused with Muttai Ma, which is a served as a Tamil dish made with egg as the main ingredient, along with flour and sugar. The Sri Lankan Tamils use it as a strengthening food. Muttai means egg and ma means flour in Tamil.[8]
