Praktika.ai is a language-learning application that uses artificial intelligence and animated avatars to provide spoken conversation practice. The app runs on iOS and Android and supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French, Portuguese, Italian, and German.[1]
Praktika was founded in 2022 by Adam Turaev, Anton Marin, and Ilya Chernyakov, who previously co-founded Cleverbots, a conversational AI platform.[2]
In May 2024, Praktika raised $35.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Blossom Capital,[3] with participation from Carles Reina (ElevenLabs) and Patrice Evra.[4][5][6][7][8] By mid-2024, the company reported 1.2 million monthly active users and annualised revenue of approximately $20 million.[9][10]
In April 2025, TIME and Statista ranked Praktika 146th among the world’s top 350 education technology companies.[11]
Platform and features
[edit]
Praktika provides conversation practice using three-dimensional avatars in scenarios such as job interviews, café visits, and travel planning.[12] The platform evaluates pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary with speech-to-text recognition and natural language processing.[13][14] It adjusts lesson difficulty based on learner performance.
Users can upload images, voice notes, and documents to initiate contextual conversations and monitor their progress through a dashboard. By 2025, the app offered more than 1,000 role-play scenarios across academic, professional, and everyday contexts.
Praktika integrates speech-to-text engines and large language models to generate dialogue.[15][16] The platform synchronises avatar lip sync and tone with audio using ElevenLabs’ text-to-speech system.[17][18]
The platform anonymises and processes interaction data in accordance with GDPR, UK GDPR, and CCPA regulations. It applies adaptive learning algorithms to adjust lesson difficulty based on user performance.
Tech.eu and EU-Startups recognised Praktika’s use of avatar-based conversation practice in the language-learning sector.[19][20] VideoSDK highlighted the platform’s AI avatars for role-play exercises.[21] Users mentioned the app’s conversation simulations while noting issues such as latency, interface inconsistencies, and sensitivity to background noise.[22]
A 2025 review of language-learning apps listed Praktika among free tools for English-speaking practice, noting role-play exercises and limited pronunciation correction.[23] An analysis by Kimola reported that learners valued the interactive dialogue and progress-tracking dashboards but identified user-interface inconsistencies and high data usage as areas for improvement.[24]
