Roy McMurtry Youth Centre sometimes shortened to “RMYC” is a provincial juvenile detention centre in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, that opened on May 28, 2009. it takes offenders between the ages 12 and 17. it was named after Roy McMurtry.[1]
Background
it has 192 beds and is divided into six residential-style cottage units.[2] it is an 86-acre property.[3]
Some features include an administrative facility, two renovated buildings used as an education centre, kitchen/workshop, a chapel, A rehabilitative centre.[4][5]
Abuse
The provincial advocate for children and youth has received more than 200 complaints about the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre since the advocate’s office began research for the report. The provincial advocate Irwin Elman says the way those complaints from youth about mistreatment by staff are handled raises “significant concerns” and also claims that there is no assurance that when assault, abuse or excessive use of force reports take place they will be handled properly. RMYC reportedly conducts its own internal investigations into abuse allegations.[6][7] A lawsuit against the Ontario government has named the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre on allegations of allegations of excessive solitary confinement.[8]
- A teen claims to have been strip searched completely naked at RMYC four times between September 23 and September 25, 2024, in less than 48 hours in Ontario custody he called it “horrifying” [9]
- Some youth have claimed that racist comments have been made.[10]
- Some youth complained that the centre failed to offer more than two meals a day on the weekends leaving 19 hours between meals at some points.[11]
- Bathrooms, while private, are equipped with a small metal viewing hatch for staff to look through if wanted.[12]
Escapes and break-ins
- On March 28, 2023, two people broke in by breaking a window hoping to extract an inmate but did not succeed.[13][14][15]
- A 17-year-old male facing multiple charges for robbery with a firearm has escaped weather or not he has been caught is unknown.[16]
- On June 24, 2012, two males escaped.[17]
